Highlights
- The closure of Game Informer has made it impossible for fans to read the publication's exclusive Dragon Age: The Veilguard content.
- Gamespot d the outlet without warning last week after 33 years, also removing all content from its website.
- While no release date for Dragon Age: The Veilguard has been officially revealed, BioWare promises to make an announcement by the end of August 2024.
The end of Game Informer marks a blow to Dragon Age: The Veilguard, as its exclusive articles and coverage remain inaccessible following the publication's closure. After years of troubling delays, lengthy media silence from BioWare, and the controversial debut of its initial trailer, Dragon Age: The Veilguard began with a rough marketing campaign. While recent reports have begun to sway public opinion regarding the upcoming RPG, much of the title's more in-depth coverage was found within the pages of Game Informer.
The game's concept is sound: a formula that combines everything that has made BioWare successful packed into a single next-gen title. As opposed to Origins and Inquisition, the combat in Dragon Age: The Veilguard takes inspiration from more action-oriented BioWare titles such as Mass Effect 2. While this means that players can no longer control their companions directly, classes in The Veilguard remain as complex as ever, featuring a total of nine specializations and an intricate "skill web" system. Many details about its character progression were first revealed by Game Informer, as Electronic Arts worked with the media outlet and its writing staff to provide exclusive pre-release coverage of Dragon Age: The Veilguard.
However, the sudden closure of Game Informer after 33 years of service has effectively thrown a wrench in BioWare's plans to market the next Dragon Age, as the articles written about The Veilguard can no longer be accessed by fans online. Though some of the material was saved via archive.org, it is only a fraction of the amount lost when Game Informer was shut down. As noted by by Alex Van Aken, a former team lead at Game Informer, even the writers can no longer access or backup their work.
Dragon Age: The Veilguard Articles On Game Informer Can No Longer Be Accessed
This is an unfortunate situation for everyone involved, and many have criticized Gamespot for the way it handled the publication's closure. With rumors of Dragon Age: The Veilguard launching in October 2024, the next few months will be critical for BioWare and Electronic Arts, as the companies may look for a new media outlet to replace Game Informer for new coverage.
Whereas the gameplay reveal of Dragon Age: The Veilguard featured the first few levels in Minrathous and Arlathan Forest, fans are hoping that BioWare releases a preview of high-level combat before launch. While it remains to be seen if The Veilguard will be present during PAX West, the developers have promised that they will reveal more content and the official release date by the end of August 2024.
