Adding mods to a popular game such as Fallout: New Vegas can add a whole new breath of fresh air to the game. This includes mods like new weapons, location expansions, ambient soundtracks, and much more. For those playing on the PC version, though, it isn't always a simple task to add mods to your game.

Making sure you properly install mods can make a huge difference to whether they will work for you. Players will also want to prevent corrupting any files, so their game can run without any hiccups. If you're unsure how to get started, here's what you need to do.

How to Mod Fallout: New Vegas

Before you add any mods to your Fallout: New Vegas copy, it's best to uninstall the game first and remove any added files or mods you might have. If you haven't added anything, then you won't need to uninstall the game. Also, make sure to run the game once before installing any mods if you haven't done so.

Then, if you are playing the Steam version of the game, open up Steam and locate your Fallout: New Vegas copy from your library. Right click on it, choose Properties, and then select Installed Files. Finally, choose Browse, which will take you to the Fallout: New Vegas folder on your computer. With this folder open, and an additional folder open for your downloads, you'll want to follow these steps:

Close

  • Start by downloading the NVSE. You'll need to have this downloaded to allow Fallout: New Vegas to accept your mods. You can find it here on Nexus Mods.
  • After downloading NVSE, you'll need to extract it. You can do this by using an app like WinRAR or 7Zip, which you can find in the Microsoft Store.
  • In the folder where you downloaded NVSE, right-click on the NVSE folder, and choose Open to extract the files.
  • Now, return to your Fallout: New Vegas game folder that we opened up from Steam. With the Fallout: New Vegas folder open, and the NVSE folder open in 7Zip, select all of the NVSE items and copy and paste them to the Fallout: New Vegas folder. You'll just want to paste it directly into the game folder, not into the Data or Redists folders.
  • Now, you'll want to download the 4GB Patcher from Nexus Mods. Follow the same steps as before, where you'll download it, extract the items, and copy and paste them directly into the Fallout: New Vegas folder.
  • After you've pasted the 4GB Patcher into your Fallout: New Vegas files, make sure to double-click the 4GB Patcher from here to ensure that it is implemented into the game. Then, just click out of the text box.

After adding these two items to your folder, it's now time to get yourself some mods.

There is one more item we are going to download to bring mods to the game: Vortex. This is a Mod Manager that comes from Nexus Mods, and you'll just want to download it, and then run it once it's finished.

Then, after you've successfully opened up Vortex, make sure to search for New Vegas in games, and click Manage. This will allow you to now start adding mods to your game. Now, click the Mods section on the left, and this is where you'll be able to add any downloaded mods you have for the game.

You can easily find mods for Fallout: New Vegas on Nexus Mods. When you select a mod you want to download on the Nexus Mods website, there will be an option next to download that says 'Vortex'. After this, it will automatically download and add the mod into Vortex, and into the game. Now, you're all set to either get started on or replay through Fallout: New Vegas with your new mods.
