Taming a Rhyniognatha in ARK: Survival Ascended is much different from the usual dinosaur. Here’s how you can get one of your own.
The Rhyniognatha is a giant, dragonfly-like insect in the popular survival game ARK: Survival Ascended, and can be used for flying around the map. This large creature is incredibly difficult to get ahold of and properly tame, especially with its aggressive nature and powerful ranged attacks that can send you flying in a matter of seconds.
However, not all hope is lost, as there is an easy method you can use to tame the Rhyniognatha and use it as your main mount. Taming this creature will not follow usual taming methods, such as setting up a trap or feeding it its favorite food. To learn how you can tame it, here's what you can do.
Where to Find Rhyniognatha
The Rhyniognatha can be found on both The Island and Lost Island maps. They are often found in swampy biomes, including:
- The Swamp nearby to the Redwood Biome (The Island map)
- The Swamp nearby to Griffin Mountain (Lost Island map)
When looking for a Rhyniognatha in these areas, it won't be too difficult to find one due to their large size and loud noises. Once you've found one, you can get started on taming it, but you'll want to make sure to bring along the right materials.

Taming a Rhyniognatha is different from most dinosaurs in the game. Instead of the usual method of feeding the creature, you will need to do the following:
- First, you will need to kill a Rhyniognatha to obtain its pheromone.
- Then, you'll need to bring along any dinosaur you have that has powerful stats and decent HP, and place the pheromone in their inventory.
- You will then need to find a female Rhyniognatha, and, whittle its HP down to 100, or 10 percent. The best way to do this is to use a Net Gun to hold up the Rhyniognatha, and then use a slightly weaker weapon to shoot at it, so you don't accidentally kill it.
- Then, the Rhyniognatha will impregnate your dinosaur with an egg. Your dinosaur will require you to feed it with a ton of different items, so you'll need to come prepared to give it what it needs. This can be anything like Kibble, Curry, Steak, and much more. This is random, so there's no way to know exactly what your dinosaur will require.
- Finally, when the process is complete, the egg will hatch, with a Rhyniognatha being born. Keep in mind that this process will kill your host dinosaur.
The Rhyniognatha is great for traversing the map, as it can move on the ground, fly, skate across the water, and also dive into the water. It can also reduce the damage it takes, and carry items at your camp like a refrigerator, or even creatures like a T-Rex. You'll find that its attacks will be very powerful as well, making them incredibly useful in battle.
