Two new DPS Jobs have arrived in Final Fantasy 14: Dawntrail, with one being the sword-wielding Viper. Like the Reaper of the Endwalker expansion, the Viper is an original Job for Dawntrail, not tied to any previous Final Fantasy games. Wielding fang-like swords that can combine into a dual-bladed weapon, the Viper is the sixth melee DPS Job that Final Fantasy 14 players can become.
Unlike the Pictomancer, which was also introduced in Dawntrail, the Viper is a Job that requires players to be up close to deal the most damage possible. While the Viper has a few ranged attacks for certain situations, staying close to a target is the best way for these slithering hunters to lock down their prey. After stringing together enough combos and building resources, the Viper can enter their Reawakened state to punish enemies with a flurry of sword strikes. However, players will have to meet a few requirements before taking up the brown coat and twin blades of the Viper.

First, Final Fantasy 14 players must be subscribed to the critically-acclaimed MMORPG, as the Viper is not part of the Free Trial. Since the Viper is new to Dawntrail, players must have purchased the expansion to accept the Job's starting quest. For Windows, Mac, and Steam players, registration codes for the Final Fantasy 14 Starter Edition and for Dawntrail for their respective platforms must be added to their accounts.
PlayStation and Xbox players will have their accounts automatically flagged for Dawntrail after purchasing the expansion directly from their console's storefront. After that, players must progress through the main story of Final Fantasy 14 and have leveled another combat-focused Job to 80, the Viper's starting level.
Where To Start The First Viper Job Quest in FF14
After reaching level 80 with any combat Job, prospective Vipers should make for the Steps of Nald, one of the main hubs of the desert city of Ul'dah. Upon arriving, players may begin the quest "Enter the Viper" by speaking with a Worried Weaver located across the street from the Immortal Flames' headquarters at coordinates X: 8.1, Y: 9.3.
With a heavy flow of players expected to log into Final Fantasy 14 during early access, players should consider using a new option to hide player characters surrounding certain quest NPCs. This can be accessed in the Character Configuration menu under Control Settings. After going through the dialogue prompts and cutscenes, players will be awarded the Soul of the Viper job crystal and a set of Viper arms and armor to get started.
Uncoiling The Combos And Tactics Of The Viper
The Viper takes inspiration from different FF14 Jobs. It shares Scouting armor and Aiming accessories with the Ninja and uses Dexterity as its primary statistic. The Viper's Job gauges are the Dual-Blade Gauge and the Serpent's Offerings Gauge, which can be moved and resized in the HUD Display Settings.
Like the Samurai, the Viper is a selfish melee DPS that provides no party utility outside of Role Actions. Upon unlocking the Viper, players should take time to read through each ability's tooltip and place skills on buttons that are easy to remember. New Vipers who are unsure of where to place certain actions and cooldowns can find a Striking Dummy throughout Final Fantasy 14 and see what controls work for them.
