Dragon Age: The Veilguard is shaping up for its Fall 2024 release, having revealed a few peeks at the story and gameplay so far. To date, BioWare has also confirmed that all Dragon Age: Veilguard companions are romanceable and are canonically pansexual, and this has been a big deal in the community. BioWare and Dragon Age have always been known for crafting fun companions and featuring fun romances, and the dev has now revealed a few more details about how they work.
Speaking to Game Informer, BioWare explained that every companion has a Relationship Level with Rook in Dragon Age: The Veilguard. This not only affects their personal feelings about the player, but also their skills. Examples of raising the Relationship Level include choices made in the world (not just with the companion), what you say to them, how you help them (or don't), and so forth. This unlocks skill points for companions, which can be spent on their skill trees.
Dragon Age: Veilguard's Relationship Level affects not just romances but friendships and abilities in general. Each romance is different and, as a result, works differently. For example, it was revealed that Bellara's romance arc runs parallel to the main story path, which means her romance may take players longer to complete than others who are more straight to the point. Another companion may have never been in a relationship before, ensuring that each one stands out from the other. At the same time, some companions will pursue romances with each other if players don't. How players impact that remains to be seen, but it'll be interesting to see how The Veilguard comes together and how their relationships with Rook and others develop.

Dragon Age: The Veilguard Companions
After all, it seems the heart of Dragon Age: The Veilguard is "found family," according to comments from game director Corinne Busche. The Relationship Level is meant to reflect this core theme beyond just romance, so it'll be interesting to see how those players dislike works out as well. Of course, fans will likely need to wait for that information — as well as information regarding any non-companion romances. There might be, as in past games, but there might not be. That's up in the air, but the various companions of Dragon Age: The Veilguard are interesting nonetheless.
Dragon Age: The Veilguard features seven companions: the Elven Grey Warden Davrin, the Qunari Warrior Taash, the Dwarven rogue (with magical powers now) Lace Harding, the Antivan Crow Lucanis Dellamorte, the Elven mage Bellara Lutara, the human mage Emmrich Volkarin, and the human mage Neve Gallus.
