Xbox Game Pass fans have another good title to look forward to, as early critic reviews for the newest game to hit the service are largely positive.
Reviews are in for the latest upcoming day-one Xbox Game Pass game, and they're largely positive. It looks like JRPG fans that are subscribed to Xbox Game Pass will be in for a treat when the newest addition to the catalog gets added on April 23. Microsoft has been on a bit of a roll recently when it comes to supplying subscribers with a steady stream of quality games, and this only continues that trend.
If there's one thing Xbox consoles are not exactly known for having, it's Japanese role-playing games. Ever since the inception of the original Xbox, Microsoft has consistently struggled with getting the full support of Japanese developers and publishers. Because of this, Xbox fans have continued to miss out on dozens of JRPGs throughout the years that have only released on Nintendo and/or PlayStation consoles. However, the amount of great JRPGs on Xbox consoles has increased considerably since the beginning of this current generation. Developers that once skipped the platform, like Atlus and Square Enix, are now releasing more of their titles on Xbox, from Persona 5 Royal and Unicorn Overlord to Final Fantasy 14 and Visions of Mana. And now, one upcoming JRPG set to hit Xbox Game Pass on day-one is continuing this trend of quality Japanese games coming to Microsoft's console.
Eiyuden Chronicle: Hundred Heroes, the newest game from the Kickstarter-funded studio Rabbit & Bear Games, has largely received "Generally Favorable" reviews from critics, according to Metacritic. At the time of writing this article, the PC version of the JRPG currently has a Metascore of 78, based on 18 critic reviews. A number of outlets have praised Hundred Heroes for living up to the standards of the '90s JRPGs it's inspired by. Many reviewers have cited a charming cast of characters, a great HD-2D art style, and an intuitive turn-based combat system as some of the various highlights of the upcoming Suikoden spiritual successor.

The game has, however, received criticism for some of its features, like its somewhat poor pacing, its inventory management systems, and its adherence to retro gameplay structures. Despite these critiques, it seems like most of the early critic reviews are in agreement that Eiyuden Chronicle: Hundred Heroes is certainly worth giving a shot. For those who may still be on the fence, even after reading these largely positive reviews, they can try the game on Game Pass instead of spending $50 to see if it's for them.
This is only the latest JRPG to launch on Microsoft's subscription service, with the critically-acclaimed Persona 3 Reload hitting Game Pass day-one earlier this year.
