Sunset Overdrive, one of Insomniac’s most underrated titles, sadly isn’t going to be ported or remade on PlayStation 5 anytime soon. Released in 2014 as an Xbox One exclusive, Sunset Overdrive puts players in a dystopian world where humankind is mutated into zombie-like creatures by a tainted energy drink, and it falls to the main protagonist to rally the survivors and fend off the hordes using imaginative, improvised weapons that seem to draw influence from Insomniac’s Ratchet & Clank series.
Critics gave Sunset Overdrive mainly positive reviews upon release thanks to its tight open-world gameplay, humorous writing, and colorful punk-rock art style that helped it stand out from other sandbox games of the time. Unfortunately, the game ultimately fell by the wayside in the face of said games, only selling a measly 1.9 million units. Still, there are plenty of Insomniac fans who look back on Sunset Overdrive fondly, especially after it was ported to Steam in 2018.
Some of these fans have been hoping to see Sunset Overdrive be remastered on PlayStation 5, but Insomniac itself recently shot down the possibility of it happening anytime soon while discussing the game on Twitter. In a post about Sunset Overdrive’s humorous respawn animations, one user suggested that Insomniac make a port or remaster for PlayStation hardware. Insomniac’s answer to this idea was to simply state that it is too busy with Marvel’s Wolverine at this time.
Insomniac Isn’t Working On Sunset Overdrive PS5 Port
It could be pointed out that Insomniac hasn’t ruled out the possibility of a Sunset Overdrive PS5 re-release outright, but the developer’s rumored slate of upcoming projects makes it highly unlikely that it could come anytime soon. According to a massive data breach last December, Insomniac has at least five major titles in its pipeline, including the aforementioned Marvel’s Wolverine, standalone games about Venom and the X-Men, the already confirmed Marvel’s Spider-Man 3, and a new Ratchet & Clank sequel.
This leaves very little room for a PS5 Sunset Overdrive re-release, much to the disappointment of the game’s cult fanbase. Past rumors have suggested that Insomniac was once planning to make a Sunset Overdrive sequel, but this project was eventually canceled. The reasons for this aren’t clear, but it was likely due to the original Sunset Overdrive’s poor sales and failure to take the gaming world by storm as Insomniac’s future Marvel titles have and the studio’s acquisition by Sony back in 2019.
