In Paper Mario: The Thousand-Year Door, there are new special bosses that were not available in the original game. This includes Prince Mush, the younger brother of Jolene, who runs the Glitz Pit in Glitzville. He reigned supreme as the first champion of the Glitz Pit, which eventually was taken over by Rawk Hawk and Mario.

While Prince Mush was first just a character mentioned in the original game, he can now be battled in the Switch version as a hidden boss. He utilizes special abilities that cannot be found against other bosses in the game, making him one of the most difficult to take on.

In order to unlock Prince Mush as a secret boss, you will first need to complete a Trouble Center request from Jolene. This will be the 'Help wanted!' request, and it will require you to head to the Glitz Pit and clean up all the Battle Trunks in the storage room. When you're finished, just visit Jolene, and she will ask you to take the trash to Goomfrey in Rogueport. He is the Goomba on the eastern side of Rogueport wearing a green hat. After giving him the trash, return to Jolene in the Glitz Pit to get your reward of 30 Coins. This Trouble Center request can be completed any time after Chapter 3.

Soon after completing this request, Jolene will email you about Prince Mush training to return to the Glitz Pit. Not too long after this message, you will receive another one from Prince Mush asking Mario to accept his challenge and battle him. Return to the Glitz Pit in Glitzville, and make sure to check in with Jolene if you have not returned to the Glitz Pit since Chapter 3. She will get you registered to fight again. Then, you will want to approach the Match-Reservation System in your Minor or Major-League Room, and choose Exhibition Match. Prince Mush will be one of the options here, and you can begin your battle with him through this method.

Prince Mush is an incredibly difficult boss that utilizes a multitude of strategies that will make some of your moves useless. Before you get started on fighting him, you will want to consider using the following partners:

  • Madam Flurrie: Can use Lip Lock, a move that completely ignores defense.
  • Koops: Can use Shell Slam, a move that completely ignores defense.

Prince Mush has a defense of 6, so utilizing these partners will make a huge difference in being able to deal more damage to him. You can also bring along the Piercing Blow badge, which will allow Mario to use an attack that completely ignores defense as well.

Try to use Superguards while in battle with Prince Mush as well, as this will completely lower his defense to 0 . Though these can be hard to hit correctly, it is worth the effort since it will knock him down. We also recommend using the special move, Power Lift, to increase your Attack and Defense. Stylish Moves will help fill up your Star Power in battle, as well.

The main issue when battling against Prince Mush is that he will change stances throughout the battle, which changes his defenses. Here is everything you need to know about his different stances, and how to approach them.

Stance

Ineffective Moves

Effective Moves

Side Step Stance

Jump moves will do no damage.

Hammer Moves, Special Moves, Koops: Shell Slam, Madame Flurrie: Lip Lock

Jump Stance

Hammer moves and partner moves from the side will do no damage.

Jump Moves, Special Moves

Defense Stance

All attacks will deal no damage.

Must successfully Superguard, and then you can use Hammer or Jump Moves.

Prince Mush will assume the defense stance when he is below half HP, and in this stage, you cannot damage him with regular attacks. Instead, you will need to perform a successful Superguard on him by pressing B at the right time. He will then be knocked down, and you can use your regular Hammer or Jump Moves on him. There will also be a stage where Prince Mush will clone himself, so we recommend using Koops' Power Shell move to easily eliminate them.

We highly recommend bringing along Life Shrooms to be able to revive any downed party members. Since Prince Mush is quite strong, it is highly possible that someone will get knocked out during the battle, so it is best to be prepared. Make sure to bring some cooked recipes and damage-dealing items, as well. After you defeat him, you will get his Belt as a reward.
