Fans of the Pokemon franchise were surprised by the work of a talented Reddit user who created a portrait of the grass-type Pokemon Sprigatito completely out of expired rice. Pokemon fans quickly upvoted the accompanying video and filled the comments with positive responses, ranging from commending the artist's work to confessing the fear of having it ruined mid-completion.
Reddit user visionsofplay is known for creating rice portraits of popular video game characters. Before working on Sprigatito, they had finished a portrait of Meta Knight and posted a timelapse of it on the r/Kirby forum. Some of the other characters they've created include Tails and Sonic from the Sonic franchise and Mario from the Super Mario franchise. After compiling all of their posts, Sprigatito is the first of their rice art to feature a Pokemon.
The artist definitely shows their talent and patience with the Sprigatito portrait. It's incredibly well done, with meticulous attention paid to every detail, including the black linework and shades of color. Visionsofplay even adds to their post how the materials to make it were sourced, stating that all the rice is expired and painted with acrylic paints that were donated by local Buy Nothing groups, meaning this Sprigatito is made out of recycled materials.
Pokemon Artist Creates Sprigatito Rice Portrait
While the timelapse is only a little over half a minute, the Sprigatito portrait has likely taken a long time to complete. The artist spreads the rice with their fingers, makes holes in it for different details like the eyes, nose, and ears, and then goes back into the portrait with tweezers for extra precision. While some artists prefer more permanent pieces, like creating a Sprigatito-themed shoe, the artist laments how they enjoy manipulating the material and taking a photo to remember it afterward. They also commented on how making this type of art helps melt away their anxieties because of its ephemeral nature.
Rice artists would likely agree that creating art using cereal grains is no easy task. Several factors play a role in the process, including precise hand-eye coordination and steady hand motion. There are also several risks associated with creating this kind of art, such as if something were to bump into it or fall on top, ruining the work. However, Pokemon fans will always grind for rewards, even if it takes a long time. Hopefully, fans will be treated to more Pokemon artwork from visionsofplay at some point soon.
