Highlights

  • A Pokemon fan's original Jirachi designs showcase unique type combinations while staying true to its wish-fulfilling lore.
  • The Steel/Fairy Mega Evolution variant features a golden palette swap and a prominent third eye design element.
  • The Dark/Psychic Last Wish variant evokes a darker theme with a black and blue color scheme, inspiring mixed reactions.

A talented Pokemon fan and artist has unveiled two new fan designs for Jirachi, the mythical Steel/Psychic Pokemon originally released as part of the game series' third generation. The recently-released designs envision Jirachi with two brand-new type combinations, showcasing the potential that future regional variants could still hold for it.

Jirachi is the Wish Pokemon, in the lore of both the games and the anime, and it slumbers for a thousand years before waking for just seven days, during which time it is able to grant wishes. The two new fan designs both embrace this lore, though in starkly different ways, while also embodying the "wish upon a star" theme by showing Jirachi as two stages in the lifespan of a star.

The first fan variant shows Jirachi as a Steel/Fairy Mega Evolution variant, with a palette swap that turns its usual white underbelly into a soft gold, while its yellow head and arm flaps have been switched to a dazzling icy blue. Also, clearly visible on the new design's abdomen is Jirachi's third eye, which takes in the energy it needs to complete its hibernation, but which is also not usually quite so prominent in its actual in-game form. The second, titled Last Wish, seems to be catching even more attention with its potentially grim implications. The design sees Jirachi as a Dark/Psychic type, with its body illuminating pale blue light and its head an inky black with a corona of light surrounding it, its glowing yellow eyes the only thing breaking up the black hole that its face has become.

An Elusive And Highly Sought-After Pokemon

Jirachi was originally introduced into the lore of Pokemon games as a bonus for American players who had reserved a copy of Pokemon Colosseum and got Jirachi through a bonus disc, while players in Europe and Australia were originally able to pick up their own Jirachi by beating the GameCube game Pokemon Channel. It's the only Pokemon in the third generation of games that can't be caught by normal means, and while modern Pokemon games make it a little easier to pick up a Jirachi, its history of rarity only adds to its appeal among fans of the franchise.

These are far from the first fan-made Pokemon, and they certainly won't be the last either, but those who have seen the new Jirachi variants on Reddit seem both enamored and even a little bit frightened by the fan-made artwork. The Last Wish form, which comes with the moniker of the Future Paradox Pokemon, leaves a lot of questions as to just what Jirachi's "last wish" would mean for the world, but as one commenter put it, the Dark/Psychic variant "looks like something out of a horror movie."
