The new Deadpool and Wolverine trailer featured several easter eggs, including a dig at the Merc with a Mouth's co-creator Rob Liefeld. Now, Liefeld has taken to social media to reveal what he thinks about the joke made at his expense.
The new Deadpool and Wolverine trailer featured a moment during which the two titular characters walk side by side on a street with damaged buildings behind them. One of the buildings features a sign above the doors and windows that reads, "Liefeld's Just Feet." The Deadpool and Wolverine easter egg was a dig at the Merc with a Mouth's co-creator, Liefeld, who is commonly criticized for being unable to draw feet.
While some fans might expect Liefeld to be upset about a joke made at the expense of his artistic abilities, it appears Liefeld was aware of the easter egg ahead of time. In a post on X, Liefeld first touted Deadpool and Wolverine's action sequences, writing, "I've been telling everyone how great this movie looks and it’s the BEST action since Winter Soldier. The car fight! Forest fight! The ********** fight! It’ll be up there with the best Comic Book Film of all time!" Liefeld then shared several X posts by other users who spotted the reference to him. Liefeld then responded to a fan who suggested the comic book writer likely laughed at the Deadpool and Wolverine trailer joke. "I'll go you one better, I approved it 9 months ago!" Liefeld explained.
Liefeld's response to the Deadpool and Wolverine trailer joke is not surprising considering Deadpool 2 already roasted his inability to draw feet. During Deadpool 2's convoy action scene, Zazie Beetz's Domino shows off her mutant powers of luck, prompting ridicule from the Merc with a Mouth. "It's certainly not very cinematic," Deadpool laments about Domino's powers before suggesting a "freak show comic book artist" who "can't draw feet' likely came up with those abilities. If it wasn't clear, Liefeld was also a co-creator of Domino.
So, Liefeld is no stranger to being roasted by the Deadpool movies, and he's likely well aware of what critics have said about his artwork. In fact, Liefeld told Inverse that Ryan Reynolds contacted him to pitch him the Domino joke, which he enthusiastically approved. So, it appears the fan who believed Liefeld would love the Deadpool and Wolverine joke was correct.
Liefeld isn't the only one who enthusiastically reacted to the new Deadpool and Wolverine trailer. While the preview offered the best look yet at Emma Corrin's villainous Cassandra Nova and several X-Men character cameos, the Deadpool and Wolverine trailer still left plenty of mystery for fans to discover when the Merc with a Mouth finally makes his MCU debut.
Deadpool and Wolverine is scheduled to be released in theaters on July 26, 2024.
