Rockstar Games is Making the GTA+ Subscription Service More Expensive

Highlights

  • GTA+ subscription service quietly increases in price, leaving already critical fans even more dissatisfied with Rockstar Games.
  • The $2 USD monthly increase for GTA+ on next-gen consoles goes into effect June 11, 2024, with no official explanation from Rockstar.
  • Despite backlash, Rockstar has added value to GTA+ by including older games like GTA: The Trilogy and Red Dead Redemption.

Rockstar Games' flagship GTA Online-focused subscription service, GTA+, is receiving a price hike with no formal announcement. This news is likely to make fans of Grand Theft Auto Online who were already critical of the service even less pleased with it.

GTA+ was introduced in March 2022 as a membership program for GTA Online players exclusively on the next-gen consoles, the PS5 and Xbox Series X/S. The service provides a number of monthly in-game perks, in addition to some persistent benefits for all members as well. Most of these perks consist of things such as free cosmetics, bonus in-game currency, discounts on vehicles and weapons, faster taxi services, exclusive locations to explore, and member-only Shark Cards. The release of the service has left a sour taste in a lot of fans' mouths, in large part because additional monetization of a decade-old game like Grand Theft Auto 5 has rubbed some people the wrong way. Now, it seems like Rockstar is taking this monetization a step further by increasing the price of the divisive service.

As first reported by Rockstar Intel, GTA+ is getting a price hike of $2 USD per month on both Xbox and PlayStation. This means that the service, which initially cost $5.99 each month, now costs $7.99. This price increase will become effective beginning on June 11, 2024. There was no official explanation or comment from Rockstar Games regarding this price hike. Rather, it was simply spotted on the official Xbox and PlayStation storefronts.

Rockstar Has Been Adding Some of Its Back Catalog to GTA+

With how frequently they have been occurring recently, price increases for subscription services should come as no surprise nowadays. Just a few days prior to this unfortunate news, EA announced that EA Play will be getting more expensive soon with a similar $1-2 dollar monthly price hike. Back in 2023, meanwhile, both Microsoft and Sony revealed significant price increases for their own subscription services — Game Pass and PlayStation Plus — which increased in price up to 35%. Ubisoft and Nintendo are some of the only major companies so far who have yet to announce price hikes for their own subscription services in the past year.

As for GTA+ itself, Rockstar has, at the very least, been trying to boost the service's value in recent months. Most notably of all, Rockstar has added some older games to GTA+. Titles like Grand Theft Auto: The Trilogy — The Definitive Edition, GTA: Liberty City Stories, GTA: Chinatown Wars, and Red Dead Redemption have been included as part of the subscription service so far, with L.A. Noire and Bully arriving later this year. Though the service is bound to receive backlash from fans for this price hike, additional perks like these in addition to the GTA Online ones may be enough to convince some fans to continue renewing their memberships instead of canceling them outright.
