Belphegor is an optional boss the player could get to fight in Shin Megami Tensei 5: Vengeance if they unlock the quest of Demeter, The Tyrant of Tennozu.
This quest is extremely rewarding and should be undertaken by players, if possible. Here’s how to defeat Belphegor and get the reward.
How To Unlock the Tyrant of Tennozu
To unlock the Tyrant of Tennozu quest, the player will have to first find Demeter. This goddess will be located in the area of the Konan 2nd block. The player will have to leave from the Leyline Fount of the Konan 2nd block and head up. The player will find a way up. The player should continue ahead and then turn left, and then left again, having to jump across some broken platforms. The player will have to go left again into the building. There, they will find Demeter, the goddess of the harvest.
She will indicate to the player the area of Tennozu and inform him that a tyrant is currently there at the peak of the mountain. This demon demands sacrifices and she wants him gone. By accepting this quest the player will have to fight against an optional boss known as Belphegor.
Where To Find Belphegor
The demon will be found in an area in the Tennozu area. The player will have to access an area in the mountain. The player will see around that area Andres demons. The precise location on the map will be pinpointed but finding the entrance could be confusing to some players. The player should stay at elevation to find it.

Before the Fight
Best Demons to Bring Along
When it comes to defeating Belphegor, the player should bring appropriate demons for this fight along. The player wants to look for demons that do not have a dark or ice weakness, and demons that can dish out light or fire attacks. Some of these demons that can be acquired around this time in the game are the following:
- Baphomet. This demon can be quite useful in this fight. It has a weakness to light, but blocks dark, which is perfect for this fight. Not only can this demon block dark, but it can also exploit Belphegor’s weakness, fire, making it ideal here.
- Parvati. This demon is not only an excellent healer, but she can also be taught a light skill to target Belphegor’s weakness. She has a weakness towards fire, which will not be of relevance in this fight. She resists ice which will be of some use with Belphegor.
- Quetzalcoatl. This snake demon with wings could come in handy during this fight. He does not block dark or ice, but does not have weakness to either so he is good to go. He can use great fire attacks which means he can target Belphegor’s weakness.
When it comes to the guests with the player, both Yoko and Tao will be very useful. Yoko has access to a fire skill, known as Agidyne. This is a heavy attack that will cause heavy damage to Belphegor.
Tao, on the other hand, can make use of a light attack, notably Mahamaon. As light is another of this demon’s weaknesses, she will also be quite useful here.
Best Affinities for the Nahobino
The player should definitely modify the Nahobino’s affinities if they haven’t before for this boss fight. Indeed, the Nahobino, by default, possesses a dark weakness, meaning he will be heavily affected by Belphegor's attacks, and possibly get one shotted.
To change the Nahobino’s affinities, the player just has to unlock the Divine Amalgamation miracle and choose a demon essence.
The player should mainly focus on blocking Dark if they cannot find a demon essence that blocks both dark and ice. These are some demons the player might be able to find around this point in the game whose affinities could be useful in this fight:
- Hariti. She blocks dark, but has a force weakness.
- Pisaca. This demon has a weakness against fire and light, but blocks dark.
- Leanan Sidhe. This demon has a weakness for force and light, but she blocks dark.
- Peallaidh. This demon has a weakness towards both light and fire, but resists both dark and ice.
Best Items to Keep on Hand
When it comes to any boss fight, the player should have some items on hand that will make this fight go smoother, some of these could include the following:
- Dark Dampener. This item allows the player to block any dark attacks from the enemy for one turn. This will come in handy as Belphegor uses these often.
- Amrita Soda. Despite his appearances, Belphegor can charm the player and their allies with the skill Marin Karin. Having this item can allow the player to heal this status ailment as needed.
Defeating Belphegor
Note: The recommended level to take on Belphegor by the game is 38. If the player undertakes this fight before, it could be a lot more challenging.
Once the player is ready, they can head to Belphegor’s location to try and take this tyrant down.
As with any boss battle, the player should go in with a Magatsuhi bar that is full. The player should immediately unleash Omagatoki: Critical to land as many powerful hits as possible on this demon.
The player can heavily rely on Yoko in this fight. Due to that, the player should raise her attack power and other stats whenever possible, such as making use of Inflaming Divinity on her.
On his first turn, he will simply do a physical attack and then gather Magatsuhi. On his next turn, it’s likely that he will simply use physical attacks again, so lowering his attack power could be useful here.
The fight should continue in a similar pattern, with his possibly making use of other attacks.
Rewards for Completing the Tyrant of Tennozu Quest
Upon defeating Belphegor, the player will receive experience points, as well as two grimoires.
Upon returning to Demeter, the player will receive a reward of 15,000 Macca, as well as 13,000 experience points.
The player will also unlock the possibility to get Tyrant Belphegor via fusion and use him in battles.
