Before The Fight

Shin Megami Tensei 5: Vengenace - How To Beat Fionn Mac Cumhaill

The best way to ease into a fight is to come prepared. Here’s everything the player should bring along or change before this fight even begins.

Best Demons To Bring Along

When it comes to the best demons for this fight, a few come to mind that might be available around the time the player fights Fionn Mac Cumhaill.

  • Cironnup. This fox from the Ainu culture could be useful in this fight. It has a resistance to both Fire and Ice, both of which are used by Fionn Mac Cumhaill. Making it inherit an electric skill will make it of great use. It can also be of use to buff allies and debuff Fionn if given the right skills.
  • Lilim. This demon is available to acquire if the player sides with her over Principality in this area of the game. She is at an extremely high level compared to the player’s current level, joining at level 32. She is great with electric skills, and has many powerful ones. Her only downside in this fight might be her weakness to Ice, but Fionn’s Bufula +3 is not typically enough to take her down.
  • Ame-no-Uzume. The goddess of entertainment in Japanese lore might be of use here. She is great when it comes to using electric skills, which will target Fionn’s weakness. She also has no weakness to either fire or ice, which means she will be safe for the most part. She is also a good healer.
  • Poltergeist. This mischievous spirit will be a perfect fit for this fight. Not only does it not have a weakness to either Ice or Fire, it also does extremely well with electric skills. Not only that, but its innate skill, Thunderous Melody allows it to increase the damage dealt by itself and allies when striking an electric weakness.

The player could also bring along one of their guests, Yoko Hiromine. She isn’t weak to either ice or fire and also has access to Zionga, a medium electric attack on one foe, which will come in use.

Best Affinities for the Nahobino

By Default, the Nahobino has a weakness to force and dark, however this can be changed by the player upon unlocking a miracle known as Divine Amalgamation. This miracle allows the player to change his affinities by using the essence of a demon.

Now, when it comes to Fionn Mac Cumhaill, the players want to be able to block, or at least resist fire attacks. While Fionn also has an ice attack, it’s a lot less destructive and the player can get away with no ice resistance, or even an ice weakness. Most demons do not have a physical weakness or blockage so that won’t be relevant at this point of the game.

At the moment, it is not easy to find a demon essence that blocks both fire and ice, as demons who block one of these tend to be weak to the other. Because of that, the player will just focus on fire blockage. Some available essence in this area could be Jack-o’- Lantern’s essence, which gives the player the ability to block fire attacks, but gives them an ice weakness. Another option is Hua Pao, which has the same affinities as that of Jack-o’- Lantern’s essence.

Best Items to Keep On Hand

Here are some items the players should keep in hand before this fight starts:

  • Physical Dampener. While Fionn Mac Cumhaill is great when it comes to fire and ice attacks, the player should also fear most of his physical attacks, especially Mac an Luin +5 . A Physical Dampener will allow the player and their allies to block any physical attacks for one turn.
  • Fire Dampener. Fionn’s fire attacks are very deadly and affect all allies when unleashed. When the player thinks he will attack with fire, they should set up a fire dampener as it blocks out any fire attack for one turn.
  • Electric Gem. If the player has any electric gem, now might be the time to make use of it. It causes a heavy electric attack to hit Fionn when used.

How To Defeat Fionn mac Cumhaill

Shin Megami Tensei 5: Vengenace - How To Beat Fionn Mac Cumhaill

The player should go into the fight with the Magatsuhi bar full to activate Omagatoki Critical. This will allow the player and their allies to immediately chip off at his health bar.

Fionn is likely to gather Magatsuhi on his turn, and that should be the player’s cue to put up a fire dampener. Fionn will unleash a powerful fire attack, Maragion +4 on the player and all their allies.

The player should use a skill such as Marakukaka to raise the defense of all allies, as they can’t just rely on dampeners to win this fight. A skill like Matarunda on Fionn can also be of use as he often raises his own attack power by using Tarukaja on himself.

After Fionn raises his own attack power, the player should definitely put up a physical dampener, as Fionn is likely to unleash Mac an Luin +5.

The fight should be consistently similar to this and, if the player keeps blocking Fionn’s attacks to the best of their ability, they should manage to take him down in a few turns.
