Sky: Children of the Light is still in early access, so expect a few hiccups. Here’s how to stop it from crashing to your desktop at launch.
Sky: Children of the Light has finally made its way to Steam after nearly a year since its official announcement. The serene online-only adventure comes from the makers of the award-winning Journey which told so many stories despite having no dialogues.
Hence, it should not be surprising that Sky also relies heavily on social mechanics. The MMO, for example, features a social currency called Hearts which is used to purchase cosmetics for your spirits. The artwork is stunning. The sound effects and environments are surreal. However, there is still room for improvement, courtesy of its early access status.
Several players have been facing issues with launching Sky: Children of the Light on Steam. The game freezes as soon as the first logo appears on-screen with the following error message: "Sky.exe is not responding." There is nothing else to do but forcefully exit the game. If you are facing the same error as well, do not fret because there is a simple fix to the startup error.
How to Fix Sky: Children of the Light From Crashing at Launch
The reason Sky: Children of the Light crashes at launch is because of your Windows Defender Firewall settings. You need to manually add the game to the list of allowed apps. In most cases, Windows Defender Firewall automatically picks Sky as an approved app. However, you need to remove it before adding it again for the game to run properly.
- Open Windows Defender Firewall by going to Start > Control Panel > System and Security. You can also use the Taskbar search box to open Windows Defender Firewall.
- Select "Allow an app or feature through Windows Defender Firewall" in the left navigation panel, or you can just paste the following: Control PanelSystem and SecurityWindows Defender FirewallAllowed apps
- Select "Change settings" and scroll down to find and remove "Sky" from the list.
- Select "Allow another app" and find Sky.exe in your Steam folder. The default path should be: C:SteamsteamappscommonSky Children of the LightSky
- Make sure that both the Private and Public checkboxes are ticked, and press Okay.
Sky: Children of the Light should now launch without any errors. If not, make sure that you are running Steam as an administrator by right-clicking on the Steam icon on your desktop and going to the Compatibility tab. You can also go to your Steam folder to right-click Steam.exe to run games in administrator mode.
Sky: Children of the Light will remain in early access until all player-reported issues are fixed. Some of the most amazing online cooperative games released recently had to spend months ironing out their technical issues. Looking at how smoothly Sky is running on the other platforms, expect Thatgamecompany do add a lot of quality-of-life improvements on Steam in the months to come.
