Someone Sold A PS5 Dev Kit As a ‘Pizza Kit’

Highlights

  • A PlayStation 5 dev kit was sold as a "PizzaStation 5" on eBay for $6,639.
  • The unique V-shaped cooling indent on the PS5 dev kit resembles a pizza.
  • Sony could take action against the seller, as dev kits are expensive and not meant for personal use.

A PlayStation 5 development kit holder has apparently sold the machine on eBay as a "pizza kit." The distinctive V-shaped cooling indent on the PS5 dev kit may have been cleverly designed to resemble the Roman numeral for "5," but internet users have amusingly likened it to a spot perfect for accommodating pizza slices.

Those interested in game development know that a dev kit is a specialized piece of hardware that allows studios to build games for the platform in question. These kits often have beefier specs and advanced proprietary tools compared to their consumer-facing variants, and so companies are understandably very protective of them. Dev kits are usually loaned out to developers as they can be highly expensive to purchase outright, and Sony levies the same rules for the powerful PS5 dev kit.

However, some dev kit users tend to take not-so-legal liberties with them, like the person who put up two PS5 dev kits for sale on eBay back in 2021. The listing was pulled in a few hours, presumably at Sony's behest, but now, someone has managed to sell a PS5 dev kit on eBay for the exorbitant sum of $6,639 (shipping included). Rather hilariously, the listing says "PizzaStation 5 Development Pizza Kit," referring to the memes about the V-shaped indent on the PS5 dev kit. Committing to the bit further, the cover image for the listing shows the dev kit with a pizza slice in the indent, complete with a PlayStation-branded pizza spatula.

An eBay Seller Auctioned Off a PS5 Dev Kit as a "PizzaStation 5"

The humorous eBay auction was discovered by Twitter user consolevariant, who believes that the seller used the witty pizza references to avoid being delisted by Sony. However, as some comments pointed out, PS5 dev kits are individually verifiable and their IP addresses are region-locked to real-life office locations, so it shouldn't take Sony long to uncover the person who sold the kit. Like with the previous eBay seller, the company has been known to act quickly for such cases in the past, and even cracked down on a YouTuber who managed to acquire a PS5 dev kit and made a video about it.

The PS5 dev kit's unique design has given birth to a plethora of entertaining memes and banter ever since it leaked in late 2019, with some even believing that it looks better than the retail PS5 console. Aesthetic comparisons aside, though, Sony's crack-down on the "PizzaStation" seller is all but inevitable, and the courageous buyer who spent over $6,600 might want to look for the refund option as well.
