One talented Sonic the Hedgehog fan recently recreated the iconic loop-de-loop from Green Hill Zone in cake form. The Sonic the Hedgehog franchise has allowed players to speed through countless memorable locations over the years, but the original Green Hill Zone remains one of the most remembered and revisited levels in the franchise. This colorful oceanside paradise was the very first level of the original Sonic the Hedgehog game and set the tone for the rest of the series thanks to its bright visuals, catchy theme music, and signature loop-de-loops.

Subsequent Sonic the Hedgehog games would pay tribute to Green Hill Zone in various ways, like having their own opening levels set in similar locations. Later entries like Sonic Generations and Sonic Mania would return to Green Hill with updated graphics or courses, and the level has been referenced in tie-in media like Sonic Prime and the live-action Sonic the Hedgehog film series. Green Hill Zone was also made into a Sonic the Hedgehog LEGO set in 2022, roughly a year after original Sonic composer Masato Nakamura released a new version of the level’s background music with lyrics.

Reddit user Goblin_au recently made a Sonic the Hedgehog-themed cake for their five-year-old child in the shape of Green Hill Zone’s famous loop-de-loop, complete with palm trees, floating Power Rings, and a figure of the Blue Blur himself as he races toward his next adventure. The bottom of the cake is chocolate, with a chocolate ganache and raspberry filling, the icing is buttercream, and the loop is made of Rice Krispies and marshmallows. Everything is edible except for the Sonic figure, though Goblin_au says that the gold paint on the Rings tastes bad.

Green Hill Zone was also recreated in the real world in 2021 when a mall in Brazil added a playground area inspired by various takes on the level in both classic and modern Sonic the Hedgehog games. Meanwhile, the digital version of Green Hill last appeared in Sonic Frontiers, where it was one of the locations pulled from Sonic’s memories in the virtual Cyber Space levels. Players will soon get to run through it once again in the upcoming Sonic X Shadow Generations, an updated version of the 2011 game with new levels devoted to Shadow the Hedgehog.

While some Sonic the Hedgehog fans have grown weary of the series constantly revisiting the original Green Hill Zone, Reddit users in the comment section of Goblin_au’s delicious-looking r/Gaming post have praised them for skillfully recreating the original Sonic level in cake form — with some even commenting that they can hear the classic Green Hill Zone theme just by looking at it. Even 33 years after Sega’s favorite hedgehog first ran through it, fans still fondly remember the colorful Green Hill Zone, and now some lucky kids can literally taste the nostalgia of this classic setting.
