- A Twitter post from Insomniac has fans concerned that the upcoming story DLC for Spider-Man 2 may be delayed.
- While the first Spider-Man game quickly added story expansions shortly after launch in 2018, Spider-Man 2 hasn't seen any story DLC after almost a year on the market.
- The studio's productivity may have been impacted by recent layoffs and the December 2023 ransomware attack.
Fans of Marvel's Spider-Man 2 may have to wait even longer than anticipated for a story DLC announcement, according to a recent update from developer Insomniac Games. As Spider-Man 2 approaches its first anniversary, the PlayStation 5 first-party exclusive has yet to see any major content updates that further the narrative of the base game.
Insomniac has supported Spider-Man 2 with smaller updates that added new suits, minor gameplay features, and a heavily-requested New Game+ mode. However, the studio has remained tight-lipped on the prospect of story DLC for Spider-Man 2, which struck many fans as odd given that the previous Spider-Man title began receiving story expansions less than two months after launch. Interestingly, the devastating December 2023 ransomware attack on Insomniac revealed that the studio does have free-to-play story DLCs planned for Spider-Man 2, but with barely any mention of target release windows.
The leaked files also showed that the first Spider-Man 2 story DLC would purportedly feature Lady Beetle, a rather obscure villain from comic lore. Since then, Spider-Man 2 fans have been waiting for an official announcement about the DLC, but to no avail. Moreover, a recent post from Insomniac's official Twitter account now suggests that the studio might need even more time to work on the Lady Beetle story expansion. Responding to a fan asking for news on the DLC, Insomniac simply stated that it doesn't have "anything new to announce." The long wait and lack of news surrounding Spider-Man 2's story expansions have led to concerns about potential cancelation among some fans.
Insomniac's Reply Is Not Definitive Confirmation Of A Spider-Man 2 DLC Delay
Even if Insomniac did have news about Spider-Man 2's story DLC, it likely wouldn't simply spill the beans in a Twitter reply to a fan. Since Spider-Man 2 is a top-tier first-party PS5 title, Sony would likely want to reserve a big story DLC announcement for an upcoming PlayStation Showcase or State of Play. It's also worth noting that the December 2023 data breach could have affected Insomniac's release schedule and possibly delayed the first story DLC for Spider-Man 2. Therefore, fans shouldn't lose all hope of additional Spider-Man 2 story content based on a random tweet from Insomniac.
With the highest first-party game output for the PS5 since the console's launch in late 2020, Insomniac is undoubtedly one of PlayStation's most efficient in-house teams. Therefore, it's a bit difficult to imagine that the studio is facing development issues over a story DLC for Spider-Man 2. However, Insomniac was unfortunately impacted by layoffs earlier this year, which, when combined with the data breach, point to the studio's productivity and morale possibly taking a temporary hit.
