Having trouble beating the Royal Shellsplitter in Another Crab’s Treasure? Here’s a guide on how to put him down easily.
Boss fights in Another Crab's Treasure are tests of skill and ability, providing players with challenges to overcome and offering suitable rewards. The Royal Shellsplitter is one of the first bosses players can encounter, depending on their chosen route to the Queen's Castle.
First-timers facing this boss may find themselves stuck if they are unprepared, under-leveled, or unfamiliar with the mechanics. Fortunately, the Royal Shellsplitter is easier to defeat than it initially seems. Here's how to do it.
Royal Shellsplitter Location
Royal Shellsplitter can be found directly east of the Shallows Entrance and the Central Shallows Moon Snail, hugging the edge of the area. If players make a beeline towards the castle instead of exploring the surroundings, they might end up fighting Nephro, Captain of the Guard, first. The Royal Shellsplitter is directly south of Nephro.
Royal Shellsplitter Attack Patterns
Close
The Royal Shellsplitter is limited to five attacks. Here is what they look like and how to avoid being hit by them:
Royal Shellsplitter Moves |
|
---|---|
Lock Smash |
Swings the padlock forward and slams it on the ground, dealing massive damage. This attack is the easiest to parry as it's the most telegraphed. |
Triple Smash |
Slams the butt of the padlock three times in melee range. Dodge sideways instead of backwards to avoid the follow-up smashes. |
Shove |
Uses his claw to shove the player if they're in melee range. Stuns for half a second and is often accompanied by a follow-up attack. |
Frighten Curse |
The Shellsplitter puts his face inside the padlock and spits out a black and purple curse that inflicts the frightening status. If frightened, Kril retreats into his shell and moves slowly, becoming vulnerable to follow-ups. This attack only works if the player is looking at him, meaning the only way to avoid being cursed is to look away from the boss by disabling lock-on. |
Grip Guillotine |
Swings his claw in a wide arc to grab the player and uses the padlock like a guillotine, resulting in instant death. The only way to survive this attack is to dodge out of the way; it cannot be parried. |
How to Beat Royal Shellsplitter in Another Crab's Treasure
Close
While the Royal Shellsplitter can be defeated without any upgrades, it is much easier to do so with a few level ups under your belt. Getting the ability put on a Shell is especially helpful as it gives Kril a massive boost to defense and survivability.
Nephro is a much easier boss than the Royal Shellsplitter, and defeating him allows players to unlock the ability to equip shells, drastically increasing their defensive abilities.
Prioritize dodging out of attacks over blocking. These attacks deal massive damage and can break shells in one or two hits, forcing the player to scramble for cover. Dodging is also more useful as the Royal Shellsplitter rarely chains attacks, so after every swing, players get ample room to get a couple of hits in before retreating. Parrying can also work wonders against certain attacks, but it requires precise timing that's easy to mess up.
It's important not to get greedy for damage. Most of the boss's attacks are not telegraphed, and despite his bulk, he's deceptively fast. The safe strategy is two swings of the weapon, dodge, dash back in for two more swings, and dodge. Rinse and repeat.
If the Royal Shellsplitter is proving too difficult to handle, return to the fight after progressing the main story and unlocking Adaptations, Shell abilities , and Stowaways.
Filling up the yellow Stagger meter at the top can make the fight much shorter, but it's a harder strategy to pull off as it encourages a riskier playstyle. Every time the player lands a hit on the boss, the yellow meter will jump up and stay there for a breath before it starts depleting again. Deal consistent damage until the bar gets filled, and then use a charged attack to knock the boss over. Once he's belly up, it's open season.
Upon defeat, the Royal Shellsplitter will drop a Clothesclaw, a treasure that can be sold for 1000 Microplastics to traders.
