World of Warcraft Making Huge Improvements to Camera in The War Within

Highlights

  • The War Within adds a new camera collision feature to reduce disruptive zooming in World of Warcraft.
  • This quality-of-life update allows the camera to bypass objects like trees, improving player visibility.
  • While not perfect, this feature enhances gameplay by providing a more seamless view of players' surroundings.

A new option in World of Warcraft: The War Within reduces object collision with the camera to prevent it from zooming in and out sporadically. This new quality-of-life feature is expected to go live in World of Warcraft with The War Within's Pre-Patch.

The War Within is bringing several user interface updates to World of Warcraft that promote accessibility and quality-of-life. From overhauls located under the Warbands feature umbrella to new icons on the World of Warcraft map to ensure fans don’t miss out on lore items in the overworld, The War Within is continuing Dragonflight’s mission of making the 20-year-old MMORPG more user-friendly.

However, a feature in The War Within fixes one of the biggest drawbacks of the camera in World of Warcraft. In one of the most recent beta builds for WoW: The War Within, a new option to allow the view of the player character to be obstructed by the environment was added. When activated, the camera bypasses objects like trees and lamp posts, rather than colliding with them, zooming in the camera in the process. At present, this option can only be activated via a console command, though it will presumably be added to the game settings when it goes live. Wowhead captured footage of this setting, which it compared to the default full camera collision.

New Camera Collision Feature in WoW: The War Within

  • Normally, most objects, including trees and fountains, block the camera, forcing it to zoom in and out to keep the character in view.
  • This new option allows some objects to bypass camera collision, giving a more seamless view of the player's surroundings by not forcing the camera to zoom in and out.

This new camera feature is a game changer. Right now, just about any physical object can cause the camera to zoom in and out sporadically; even small banners, signs, and other simple set dressings. This can be especially annoying when fighting challenging Mythic dungeons in WoW, or when participating in PvP. With this option, fans can enjoy a more seamless view of their surroundings with much less disruption.

Of course, this feature still has its limitations. The camera cannot get behind solid objects like walls or buildings, and objects don’t turn translucent when players move behind them, meaning characters can easily become completely obscured. That said, World of Warcraft is adding another quality-of-life feature that can show a character’s silhouette while hidden behind other objects. When paired with this new option, players should be able to keep track of their characters more easily than ever before.
