World of Warcraft Reveals Dracthyr Class Expansion Details

Key Takeaways

  • Dracthyr in WoW Patch 11.0.5 can be more than just Evokers, choosing from Hunter, Rogue, Priest, Mage, Warrior, and Warlock.
  • Dracthyr racial abilities, like Tail Sweep and Wing Buffet, have been adjusted to accommodate the new classes available.
  • The release date for Patch 11.0.5 is expected in late October/early November to coincide with WoW's 20th anniversary event.

World of Warcraft has revealed that Dracthyr will be able to choose from the Hunter, Rogue, Priest, Mage, Warrior and Warlock classes in Patch 11.0.5. This update, which coincides with the 20th anniversary of World of Warcraft, will finally let Dracthyr play classes other than Evoker.

When they were added in Dragonflight, the Dracthyr could only choose a single class: Evoker. This restricted class tapped into the Dracthyr's connection to the power of the Dragonflights to destroy their enemies and heal their allies. However, World of Warcraft recently confirmed plans to let Dracthyr choose other classes sometime in The War Within, though the specifics remained sparse.

Now, World of Warcraft has revealed how this class expansion works, what options they can choose, and when it will happen. Once World of Warcraft: The War Within Patch 11.0.5 releases, Dracthyr will be able to be Rogues, Priests, Warriors, Warlocks, Hunters, and Mages. When using these classes, players can freely fight in their Dracthyr or Visage forms, or use Chosen Identity to transform into their Dracthyr form in combat, but their Visage form outside of battle. To accommodate these new classes, Dracthyr racial abilities have been adjusted: Tail Sweep and Wing Buffet now have three-minute cooldowns, and no longer automatically shift into their draconic form for non-Evokers. The Talent Tree for Evokers has been adjusted accordingly to make the nodes that improve these abilities reduce their cooldowns to roughly where they were before.

Dracthyr Class Availability in WoW Patch 11.0.5

  • Available
    • Evoker
    • Hunter
    • Mage
    • Priest
    • Rogue
    • Warlock
    • Warrior
  • Unavailable
    • Death Knight
    • Demon Hunter
    • Druid
    • Monk
    • Paladin
    • Shaman

Unfortunately, Dracthyr cannot be Death Knights, Demon Hunters, Druids, Paladins, Shamans, or Monks. The limited Death Knight and Demon Hunter Hero Classes did not come as a surprise, but the absence of Monks did, as they are currently available to every other race in the game. Druids, Paladins, and Shamans are the three classes that require the most custom assets and lore to create, and are the ones that haven’t been expanded to more races in World of Warcraft yet, so they could become available later on.

While Patch 11.0.5 does not have a release date yet, the 2024 roadmap placed it in the fall. If it follows the eight-week release cadence it has stuck to during Dragonflight for the most part, fans can expect the update to arrive in late October or early November. Patch 11.0.5 will also include the massive 20th anniversary event for World of Warcraft, which is set to take place during all of November and December – a release window that matches this cadence perfectly. If Dracthyr ever get access to the Druid, Paladin, or Shaman classes, it would happen when and if World of Warcraft expands them to other races in the future.
