World of Warcraft Classic Season of Discovery is finally giving players a way to get some old Rune engravings on alts without re-doing lengthy quests and grinds. This new World of Warcraft Classic catch-up mechanic is arriving in Season of Discovery Phase 5 on September 26.
Season of Discovery is World of Warcraft Classic’s most recent experiment in which fans experience a nostalgic Azeroth with a number of twists and surprises scattered throughout. One of the biggest features in WoW Classic Season of Discovery is Rune engravings – reusable passives and active abilities that can be applied to gear, giving huge increases in power, and even letting classes fill roles they normally cannot. Some Runes are acquired simply by defeating certain enemies or grinding reputation, while others require lengthy quests in order to unlock.
However, World of Warcraft Classic Season of Discovery is adding a catch-up mechanic that will make picking up some of these more difficult Runes on subsequent characters much easier. While exploring the Public Test Realm for Phase 5, WoW content creator Sarthe found four new account-bound items players can purchase with Tarnished Undermine Reals in WoW Classic Season of Discovery, provided the accompanying quest line has been completed once. By sending these emblems to alts, fans can buy the Runes awarded from these questlines without repeating them again on their other characters, even if they are of a different class.

The Wild Gods, Dark Riders, Leyline Confluxes, and Illari Duskfeather quests in World of Warcraft Classic Season of Discovery each grant Runes for all nine classes, and require a fair bit of work in order to complete. Using these items, which only cost five Undermine Reals each, fans can easily skip these quests and unlock vital Runes on alts – though because mail cannot be sent across faction lines, players will still need to do them at least twice if they play both Alliance and Horde characters.
Needless to say, fans are excited to see an easier way to acquire these Runes. While many players wish World of Warcraft would have added this catch-up mechanic sooner, most agree now is better than never, and will gladly opt out of repeating frustrating Rune unlocks in WoW Classic Season of Discovery like hunting down the Dark Riders.
These items should become available once World of Warcraft Classic Season of Discovery Phase 5 begins on September 26. In the meantime, fans might want to consider taking advantage of the Free Character Moves to move to Wild Growth, Crusader Strike, or Living Flame, depending on their Realm type and region, as all other servers have officially been d down to new players.
