Xbox Series X and S Lifetime Console Sales are Better Than Expected

Highlights

  • Xbox Series X/S sales surpass expectations, boosted by strong Xbox Game Pass subscriptions.
  • Industry insider Mat Piscatella compares Series X/S to Xbox 360 sales, sees positive trajectory.
  • Console market not declining, with potential sales boost from upcoming big game releases.

The Xbox Series X/S sales are doing better than expected. While some fans would argue that the Xbox Series X/S has had its share of challenges compared to its contemporaries, Xbox has also had its successes. The best one being Xbox Game Pass subscriptions, which continue to grow in numbers. Not only that, but some believe that the Series X/S is doing better than the Xbox One did when it was launched.

Even as recent reports continue to circulate that Xbox Series X/S console sales are currently going down, some believe that the lower statistics don't mean that Microsoft has completely failed in the console market. The Xbox Series X/S has officially been out for almost four years, and it's possible that the initial hype is just dying down. One industry insider has now shared his thoughts on this matter.

Video Game Industry Advisor and former Activision and Warner Bros Games employee Mat Piscatella shared some statistics which show that the Xbox Series X/S is still in a good place. Piscatella stated that the Xbox Series is holding to Xbox 360's LTD pace, with it also having passed the original Xbox's sales. With how many fans consider the Xbox 360 as the best console of the seventh generation, that's not a bad statistic at all. In comparison, the PlayStation 5 is 7% ahead of PS4's LTD and the Switch is 1.1 million units behind PlayStation 2 in lifetime sales.

Is the Console Market Declining?

Mat Piscatella wanted to debunk rumors and talks that the console market is doomed. And while it has been said that PS5 console sales are down as well, Piscatella believes that sales will receive a boost in the near future, especially with a lot of big games coming out. He also thinks that the release of EA Sports College Football 25 will also affect those who wish to purchase a PS5 or an Xbox Series X/S. In addition, it was also discussed that overall spending on gaming during the first half of 2024 was 1% higher than the previous year, which shows good activity in terms of sales.

While some fans from the comments section believe that the Xbox lost the console wars of this generation, Piscatella reiterated that it did not mean that sales for both PS5 and Series X/S were bad. However, he left a small footnote that things could always change on a whim, positively or negatively.
