  • Custom-built colossal robots, like the Metal Gear Rex, have become a trend in the Tears of the Kingdom community.

A creative The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom player recreated the iconic Metal Gear Rex from the beloved Metal Gear Solid series. Since its launch in 1987, Hideo Kojima's Metal Gear series has been a pervasive influence on both the stealth-action genre and the video games industry as a whole. Now, one fan is paying tribute to the long-running tactical espionage action franchise by bringing one of its most fearsome weapons to The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom.

There's been no shortage of incredible player builds from the Tears of the Kingdom community, who have done their best to test the limits of the game's unique Ultrahand ability. Many users have used their new power to manufacture machines that could gather ludicrous amounts of materials with the flick of a switch. Some crafted vehicles so they could roam the land of Hyrule in style, with options ranging from speedy motorcycles to full-blown electric airplanes. But others also used the Ultrahand to create massive weapons of war that could trample over dozens of enemies, such as a deadly spiral vehicle made from multiple Colgera jaws.

Now, one player has created a weapon that might surpass them all. Twitter user saiotoko002 posted a short clip showcasing their reimagining of Metal Gear Rex, the eponymous bipedal mech from the legendary Metal Gear series. Just as in the stealth-action franchise, the Tears of the Kingdom version of Rex notably uses a unique hip joint that allows it to walk on two digitigrade legs and even comes equipped with a gun on one of its arms. Fans were impressed with the build, with users applauding saiotoko002 for their creative use of the Zonai devices and Ultrahand system in recreating one of the most iconic mechs in video game history.

Tears of the Kingdom Players Are Obsessed With Mechs

This wasn't the first time a creative Tears of the Kingdom fan used the game to live out their giant mech fantasies. In fact, custom-built colossal robots are something of a trend in the community. One user previously created an Iron Man-style suit that could either be piloted or set to follow and fight alongside the player automatically. Just recently, another Tears of the Kingdom player built a sea serpent mech, which could not only swim but also featured a rotating head and even a Zonai laser.

The Ultrahand ability is undoubtedly one of the highlights of The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom. Unfortunately, it might be some time before fans see a similar mechanic in future mainline The Legend of Zelda titles, as Nintendo confirmed the Ultrahand will not return in upcoming entries.
