Aspyr is restoring Tomb Raider 1-3 Remastered’s missing Lara posters

Tomb Raider 1-3 Remastered’s missing posters are on their way back, and will be restored by the game’s next patch. And despite cries of censorship, developer Aspyr Media has stated that they were removed in error.

If you’re scratching your head, wondering what we’re talking about, count your blessings that you missed out on the drama. Between this and ‘discussions’ of Stellar Blade’s slightly modified outfits, Twitter and YouTube have been swimming with accusations of censorship. One of the levels in Tomb Raider 1-3 remastered, Sleeping With The Fishes has, as spotted by Twitter user DOA Momji, posters of protagonist Lara Croft above a set of lockers. It’s a neat fourth-wall breaking nod to how the character was marketed. And it also features her original in-development name, Laura Cruz.

But then, when the game’s second patch dropped, these posters disappeared. It wasn’t the end of the gaming industry as we know it, though some people painted it as such. But it was certainly a little odd. Tomb Raider 1-3 Remastered comes with a disclaimer that pops up the first time you load the game, noting that the game contains “offensive depictions of people and cultures rooted in racial and ethnic prejudices.” So why leave that in and yank those posters from this Tomb Raider remaster?

Aspyr has now said that it was unintentional and (via Nintendo Life) they’ll add those posters back in with the next patch. “In the recently released Patch 2, we made several texture and graphical updates to the HD version. As part of these updates, the posters in Sleeping With The Fishes (The Lost Artifact) were inadvertently removed in the HD version of the game,” the developer explains in a tweeted support article.

“This has been resolved and these textures will be restored in Patch 3,” the article continues. There’s no date for the third patch as yet, but we’d expect it to drop some time in May. And if you’ve yet to tackle Tomb Raider 1-3 remastered, read our review.
