Assassin’s Creed Mirage is Dropping its Contentious Chromatic Aberration

Ubisoft has announced that it’ll be turning off the chromatic aberration feature in Assassin’s Creed Mirage. It won’t be removed entirely but anyone players who want it enabled will have to turn it on.

Chromatic aberration is one of the features that, like motion blur, is highly contentious. It’s proved so divisive that PC players have been modding the game just to remove it. But what is it?

Basically, it’s a screen effect that gives the impression a scene has been filmed with an actual camera, instead of rendered on a PC. It’s a smart piece of trickery, we’ll admit, but it’s not always welcome.

We’d argue that it’s warranted in games where you’re trying to give the impression you’re looking at actual film footage. So if Don’t Scream used it, we’d be fine with that.

But the slight blurriness it can add to the edge of objects isn’t always welcome. It didn’t particularly bother us when we were playing Assassin’s Creed Mirage but we absolutely get why it’s been annoying other people. Some have even reported that it makes the game uncomfortable to play.

“Every corner or line of every object is a blurry mess with like multi colour fringes. It’s honestly hurting my eyes to play and I started feeling sick after a while”, wrote one Reddit user. Many other people have echoed that sentiment.

But, as tweeted out by the official Ubisoft support account, and confirmed on Discord (spotted by PCGamesN), it’ll be made a strictly optional setting with the game’s end-of-month update.

“With our upcoming update coming around the end of the month, chromatic aberration will be deactivated by default on all platforms,” reads the tweet, adding that Assassin’s Creed Mirage players can re-enable it.

So if you’ve finding the game a little hard on your eyes, that should hopefully help. And if you’ve not tackled the game, check out our Assassin’s Creed Mirage review here.
