Balatro’s publisher Playstack and developer LocalThunk has today shared a major milestone: the game has sold two million copies. In the six months since it launched, that’s an incredible achievement — but it’s no real surprise, considering Balatro has more or less taken the world by storm.
Two million copies is a rather large milestone for any game, but considering Balatro is an indie effort, developed largely by one person, it’s a huge feat. Those sales are spread across PS5, Xbox, Switch and PC — unfortunately we don’t have a breakdown of each platform.
Not yet played Balatro? You’re missing out. Based on the rules of poker, this captivating little roguelike card game is filled with jokers and modifiers which makes every game you play different. When we reviewed it in February, we called it “one of the most captivating card-based roguelikes [we’ve] had the pleasure of playing.”

The milestone comes with the first of three exciting announcements from Playstack and LocalThunk. Over the course of the next two months, they’ll be running a “Three-of-a-Kind of Surprises” campaign, where new updates and announcements will be revealed piecemeal. The first is that a major gameplay update will be coming to Balatro for free in 2025, bringing new ideas and strategies to the game.
More information on the update, along with the remaining “surprises”, will be coming in due course. Until then, we’ll be celebrating LocalThunk’s incredible success by spending yet more time in Balatro this evening.
