Remember Pyramid Head, the Silent Hill 2 monster who’s found fame beyond the bounds of the game? He could be getting his own origin story in Bloober Team’s Silent Hill 2 remake and fans are rolling their eyes.
According to retailer Best Buy, who have listed the Silent Hill 2 remake on their site, “Fan favourite character, Pyramid Head, makes a return along with a special origin story for fans to play through”.
Why is that a problem? Well, for some it’s not going to be a big deal, especially those who are new to the franchise. But series fans take issue with his description as a ‘fan favourite’. “Konami really thinks it’s Silent Hill’s pikachu, huh…”, notes one Twitter user.
It’s not entirely clear whether Pyramid Head is a product of James’s guilt or whether he’s just moulding his appearance. There are scraps of lore in Silent Hill 2 that suggests at least one other person was tormented by a similar being.
But Konami has taken him and run with him, turning him into skateboards, statues and so on. He turned up in the Silent Hill movie, then Silent Hill Homecoming. Sure, those statues are cool but Pyramid Head was never the focus of Silent Hill 2 and we’re hoping the remake sticks to that.
Some fans are taking this as evidence that Bloober Team, who are making the remake, are doing it wrong. We hope that, if Best Buy have it right, the ‘origin story’ is optional. Silent Hill 2’s Maria got her own side-story, Born From a Wish, which was there if you wanted. Wwe played it once and never touched it again. And like Maria, there’s nothing gained from knowing Pyramid Head’s ‘origin’.
But like it or not, Pyramid Head has become one of the most recognisable things about the series. However he figures into it, we’ve got our fingers crossed Bloober can deliver something approaching the original. We’ll have to wait till 2024 to find out, when it’s released on PlayStation 5 and PC.
