Borderlands 4 and Tiny Tina’s Wonderlands 2 Are in Development According to an Ex-Employee Profile

According to the profile of a technical director who was working with Gearbox, Borderlands 4 and Tiny Tina’s Wonderlands 2 are in development at Gearbox. Or, at least, they were when they left but we’ll get to that later.

As reported by Insider Gaming, Randel Reiss worked at Lost Boys Interactive which was, back in 2022, operating as a support studio for Gearbox. Reiss was there for just three months but according to his Linkedin profile, he worked on both Borderlands 4 and Tiny Tina’s Wonderlands 2.

The latter, if you’ve not played it, is a fantastic and fantastical Borderlands 3 spin-off, a Dungeons and Dragons-style take on the game. We’d absolutely play a sequel, though Gearbox hasn’t officially announced anything.

Does this mean those sequels are actually happening? Well, Gearbox’s parent company is Embracer Group which has been laying off an awful lot of employees of late. They’ve recently announced layoffs of 900 staff, despite having “one of our strongest quarters for new releases ever”, according to their own investor report.

So, any Embracer-owned companies could find themselves understaffed or, worse case scenario, shuttered. That said, the Borderlands series has generally performed well for Gearbox and, as previously reported, Embracer definitely has its eye on sequels. We’d be surprised if either game got canned because they’re as close to a sure-fire hit as Gearbox is likely to get.

Don’t expect to see them just yet. If these are happening, we’d expect to hear nothing official until at least early 2024, maybe even Summer Games Fest. But if you’re a Borderlands fan it’s something to look forward to.
