Can You Play Cities: Skylines 2 With a Controller?

Find out whether Cities: Skylines 2 supports controllers/joypads and, if it does, whether you should be playing the game with one.

Cities: Skylines 2 is a surprisingly accessible city builder. But what if you’re planning on playing it with an Xbox controller/joypad? It’s accessible, yes, but also complex. And given the sheer amount of things to do it seems like it might not be suited to a controller. So if you’re wondering, can you play Cities: Skylines 2 with a controller/joypad and should you, here’s what you need to know.

You can play Cities: Skylines 2 with a controller, which makes sense given that the game was originally set to launch simultaneously on PC and console. However, the console versions were pushed back and the game was first released on PC. So you can play Cities: Skylines 2 with a controller/joypad.

But should you? That’s down to personal preference. We have our PC right next to our TV so we love playing PC games on the big screen. And we’re happy to report that Cities: Skyline 2’s tutorial doesn’t ignore the controller. Instead, it teaches you how to use a controller/joypad to play the game. We had few problems playing the game, navigating menus etc.

There are a couple of snags, however. Firstly, when you start the game, the game doesn’t tell you to select the city map. We were waggling away with the joysticks till we realised it was the D-Pad we had to use. But Cities: Skylines 2 doesn’t tell you that. Also, selecting items on the main map is slightly fiddlier with a controller.

So, based on our experience, you can play Cities: Skylines 2 with a controller/joypad. It’s fractionally fiddlier than with a keyboard and mouse but if you’re playing it on a big TV it’s worth the trade-off.
