With the last day of January upon us, a good way to end the month is with a lovely new slice of State of Play. Don’t you think? It’s a good job that’s exactly what we’ve got, then!
Sony has unleashed its first State of Play of the year, offering up around 40 minutes of new trailers. We’ve had a new look at some games we’ve already known about, and we’ve also got some brand new announcements.
Did you miss the stream? Don’t worry: we’ve got you covered. Here’s everything that was announced and shown off during tonight’s State of Play.
Helldivers 2
Out next week, the State of Play kicked off with a new trailer for Helldivers 2. As you’d expect, a whole lot of shooting, explosions, and aliens. Looks like good, mindless fun, if that’s your bag. It’s out on 8th February, and it’s exclusive to PlayStation.
Stellar Blade
Next up is Stellar Blade, an action game coming later this year. Set in a post-apocalyptic world, the human race has long since fled to an otherworld colony. You’ll play as Eve (or Angel, as she’s known to some), a human remaining on Earth who wants to help the few others who still remain. But with plenty of alien beasts to fight and a wasteland of a world to explore, she’s got her work cut out for her.
Honestly, it looks really nice, and its combat looks to be fast and satisfying: we’re thinking (hoping) it’s in the realms of DMC. It has a release date: April 26th.
Sonic x Shadow Generations
Sonic Generations is getting a remaster! This is the Sonic Generations you know and love, but with extra Shadow the Hedgehog. There’s no release date, but it’s set to release this autumn.
Zenless Zone Zero
Fast-paced and with 2D anime art style, the trailer for Zenless Zone Zero hasn’t given us much to go on. It’s “currently in development”, so probably still a way away. But one to keep on your radar if you’re an anime fan.
Foamstars
Next up is Foamstars, which is coming to PS4 and PS5 next week. It’ll be landing on PS Plus Extra, too, so if you’re a subscriber you won’t need to pay a penny. It’s a multiplayer game where foam is your weapon. What more do you need to know?
Dave the Diver
The indie-not-so-indie hit Dave the Diver is swimming its way to PS5. It’s coming in April, and brings with it a Godzilla crossover – coming a month later, in May. Yeah, we’ll happily play through this again. You can read our PC review of Dave the Diver here.
V Rising
Ready to be a vampire? V Rising is making its way to PS5 after a successful launch on PC. It’s coming at some point this year: we don’t have a specific date yet.
Silent Hill: The Short Message
Here’s the one you’ve been waiting for. Or, at least, one of the ones you’ve been waiting for. Silent Hill: The Short Message is about a girl called Maya, and looks to be a very dark, disturbing journey into her head. There’s some serious PT inspiration here, but we’ll lap it up. The best news? It’s free to play, and it’ll be available tonight.
Silent Hill 2
Now, this is the one you’ve been waiting for. It’s been a while since we’ve had a glimpse at the Silent Hill 2 remake, in production by Bloober Team. The trailer shows plenty of bloodshed as we follow James, shooting his way through familiar, terrifying enemies. Sadly, there’s still no release date though. Damn.
Judas
This is coming from the makers of BioShock. The trailer doesn’t give much of its gameplay away, but its world – as BioShock-y as it looks – is intriguing, and we’re looking forward to finding out more. It’s a first-person shooter where you’re equipped with more than just guns: you’ll have powers of some sort, too. There’s no release date just yet.
Metro: Awakening VR
Coming from Vertigo Games and Deep Silver, we’re getting a brand new Metro game. A PSVR 2 Metro game, putting you closer to the underworld danger than ever. Are you brave enough? We’re not sure we’re brave enough. It does look pretty neat though, providing you’ve got the guts. It’s out later this year.
Legendary Tales
Another PSVR 2 game here from Urban Wolf Games. Looks like you’re thrown into some sort of medieval world where you’ll be battling with swords and pitchforks against armies of soldiers. The trailer’s a bit rough-looking , but we’ll reserve judgement for now. Not for long, though: it’s out on 8th February.
Dragon’s Dogma 2
Here’s another look at Dragon’s Dogma 2, the long-awaited sequel from Capcom. As you’d expect, it’s action-packed and bombastic, and in the trailer we’ve seen players go up against a variety of huge, beastly bosses. And dragons. Of course there are dragons. It’s coming on 22nd March, so not too far away.
Rise of the Ronin
Next up is Rise of the Roning, an RPG set in 1800s Japan. Players take on the role of a Ronin who can glide through the air, ride on horseback and expertly swing his sword to defeat enemies. Stealth is going to play a big role, and with an open world to explore, it looks like players will have a say in how, and when, they want to approach missions. It looks great, and we’re digging its visceral combat that rewards blocks and parries. It’s out on 22nd March. Same day as Dragon’s Dogma 2. RIP.
Until Dawn
It’s been rumoured in recent days, and it seems they were right: we’re getting an update of Until Dawn. It’s coming from brand new studio Ballistic Moon, and it looks to be everything we remember from the original, just with new, shiny visuals. We are here for it. There’s no release date yet, but it’ll be coming to PS5 and PC. Worth noting it’s the first time Until Dawn has been on PC, too.
Death Stranding 2: On the Beach
Did you like Death Stranding? Do you like Hideo Kojima’s unique brand of… well, everything? Then you’re going to want to get all up in the face of Death Stranding 2. Norman Reedus returns as Sam, and this time he’s accompanied by, uh, a talking puppet? No, really. Looks like you can expect lots of walking acrossing epic landscapes, and a story to keep you gripped/perplexed throughout. We’ve got a while to go, though: it’s out sometime in 2025.
And that’s it, but not for long. There’s another State of Play in a week’s time, on 6th February. It’ll be focusing on Final Fantasy VII: Rebirth, which is out at the end of February.
