Forget Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic, Baldur’s Gate 3 Has Taken the Companion-Betraying Crown

It used to be that Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic let you be the worst ‘friend’ to your companions but now Baldur’s Gate 3 has surpassed it for companion cruelty.

What are we talking about? If you missed this particularly evil act in Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic, you joined up with Mission Vao and Zaalbar, her Wookie companion who’d sworn a life debt to her. However, towards the end of the game you can force Zaalbar to murder her.

Yes, it’s a horrible, horrible thing to do and up until Baldur’s Gate 3 came along we thought Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic was the king of being awful to companions. BG3 absolutely pips KoToR to the post.

We’ve yet to experience every single one of these outcomes, because the game is so huge. But, over on Reddit, Baldur’s Gate 3 players have been sharing the worst fates you can inflict on your companions, if you’re playing as the Dark Urge, and they’re just.. wow.

We’re not going to post the entire list here, because there are some serious, serious Act 3 spoilers. Some but not all of these will require you to be playing as the Dark Urge character. Highlights include:

  • Dispatching a companion’s parents in front of them
  • Letting a character’s mind get broken
  • Gaslight another companion before sacrificing her in a ritual

Bear in mind, these aren’t just random NPCs, these are characters who travel with you, with their own backstories, motivations and dreams. Which you crush. If you’ve got the stomach for it, the full Reddit thread is here, along with a debate about some even nastier fates. And if you’re playing Baldur’s Gate 3, well.. let’s just say you’ve got some decisions to make.
