We genuinely didn’t think we’d see another month as stacked as September, but here we are in October, staring down the barrel of another month with more games than we can shake a DualSense at. There are some belters to look forward to, though, with the likes of the long-awaited Silent Hill 2, and of course the expansion to Diablo IV. Hype, much?

As usual, we’ve picked out a selection of both AAA games and smaller releases, covering everything that we think is worth keeping an eye on this month. Of course, some titles are missing: this isn’t an exhaustive list of every game out in October, but we think we’ve done a decent job of curating the highlights.

Remember to check into GameSpew through the month where we’ll have coverage on October’s best (and not-so-best) games, and a whole lot more.

Free-to-play Throne and Liberty lets its players loose in the vast world of Solisium. It’s an open-world MMORPG that will have you exploring, engaging in battle, teaming up with players and a whole lot more. If you’re a fan of fantasy open worlds, there’s no reason not to give this one a try — did we mention it’s free to play?

  • PS5 and PC

Surely Until Dawn needs no introduction? Now almost 10 years old, the original game has been remade, with fresh visuals and some quality-of-life improvements to make it better (and scarier) than ever. If you’ve already played it, you know what to expect. But if you haven’t, look forward to one of the best horror narratives you’ve ever experienced. You can read our review of the original game here.

Silent Hill 2

  • 8th October
  • PS5 and PC

Bloober Team, the developer behind Blair Witch and The Medium, has been given the reins of developing the Silent Hill 2 remake. It feels like we’ve been waiting for this forever, but it’s finally just around the corner, and we couldn’t be more excited to see how James’ terrifying visit to Silent Hill pans out in the modern age.

Diablo IV: Vessel of Hatred

Games to watch out for this October

  • 8th October
  • PS4, PS5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X/S and PC

If you love Diablo IV as much as we do, undoubtedly you’re already excited for Vessel of Hatred, the game’s first major expansion. It adds in a new character class, the Spiritborn, along with new story, a new region to explore, and lots more opportunity to defeat evil and gather loot. We can’t wait.

Metaphor: ReFantazio

Games to watch out for this October

  • 11th October
  • PS4, PS5, Xbox Series X/S and PC

Metaphor: ReFantazio is the latest game from the team behind Persona, and we’re very much looking forward to getting our hands on this. It leaves behind Persona’s school setting and instead goes full-on fantasy, telling a story of a mystical kingdom currently under the spell of a terrible curse. Expect to spend your time questing, exploring dungeons, hunting for treasure and building relationships with your peers.

Neva

Games to watch out for this October

  • 15th October
  • PS5, Xbox Series X/S, Switch and PC

Remember Gris? Neva is the next game from the same developer, once again bringing us breathtaking visuals and a puzzle-platformer experience that looks absolutely sublime. You’ll take on the role of young woman Alba and the wolf cub she’s bound to as they make their way through a dangerous world filled with pitfalls and enemies. Alba and her cub’s relationship will evolve over time, we’re told, and we can’t wait to see how that impacts the game.

Nikoderiko: The Magical World

Games to watch out for this October

  • 15th October
  • PS5, Xbox Series X/S and Switch

If you’re a fan of classic platformers, we think Nikoderiko: The Magical Kingdom is one for you. This platformer looks joyous and colourful, and with the likes of minecart levels, chase sequences and 3D areas to explore, we reckon it could give some of the classics a run for their money.

A Quiet Place: The Road Ahead

Games to watch out for this October

  • 17th October
  • PS5, Xbox Series X/S and PC

A Quiet Place: The Road Ahead is based on the movie franchise, but instead of telling the same story, this has its own original narrative, complete with a cast of brand new characters. But set in the same, terrifying universe, you better hope you can keep your characters quiet, otherwise you’re in for a lot of trouble.

Unknown 9: Awakening

Games to watch out for this October

  • 18th October
  • PS4, PS5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X/S, PC

Truth be told, we don’t know a huge amount about Unknown 9: Awakening. But we are very intrigued by it. The latest release from Bandai Namco promises a third person action adventure, with players taking control of Haroona. She’s got a very special ability that allows her to travel into a strange dimension — but it’s a power that puts her at risk from being hunted down by the Ascendants who want to use her power for evil.

Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Mutants Unleashed

Games to watch out for this October

  • 18th October
  • PS4, PS5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X/S, Switch and PC

It’s a good time to be a Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles fan. The games have seemed to come thick and fast in the last few years, and the latest, Mutants Unleashed, is just around the corner. This 3D adventure continues the story of last year’s Mutant Mayhem movie, sporting a similarly unique art style, and it sees Leonardo, Donatello, Raphael and Michelangelo battle to save New York from a new threat. Cowabunga!

Halloween/Ash vs Evil Dead RetroRealms Double Feature

Games to watch out for this October

  • 18th October
  • PS4, PS5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X/S, Switch and PC

Technically two separate games, these retro-styled action platformers based on Halloween and Ash vs Evil Dead are getting bundled up into one physical release. But digitally, you can buy them both separately. Designed to play like 16-bit throwbacks, we think they’re going to be a bit of a treat for fans of the franchises. And they’ve been developed by Wayforward, so you know they’re in good hands.

Fear the Spotlight

Games to watch out for this October

  • 22nd October
  • PS4, PS5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X/S, Switch and PC

Remember when Blumhouse announced it was moving into the video game space? Fear the Spotlight is the first game we’re seeing from that new venture. It’s a lo-fi, 90s-inspired third-person horror that sees you unravelling an unsettling mystery in a school after dark. You’ll need to solve puzzles, explore, keep your wits about you and, of course, stay out of the light.

Date Everything

Games to watch out for this October

  • 24th October

Call of Duty: Black Ops 6

Games to watch out for this October

  • 25th October

Another year, another Call of Duty game. After last year’s disappointing Modern Warfare 3, Black Ops 6 is looking rather good, however. As ever, it’s set to feature a thrilling campaign that promises some thrilling set-pieces, as well as online multiplayer modes that will keep players entertained all year round. But what we’re most looking forward to is the return of the round-based zombies mode. It always proves to be a blast with friends.

The brilliant Sonic Generations is being given new life on current generation consoles and PC. The latest entry into the Life is Strange series reunites us with the first game’s protagonist, Max. A couple of years have passed, however, and she’s now in college. Her supernatural powers haven’t left her, though; instead, they’ve morphed, allowing her to not only control time but to step into different realities. Woah. As ever, we’re expecting an emotional tour de force, and we can’t wait to meet up with Max again.
