Remember 2006’s Call of Cthulhu: Dark Corners of the Earth? Or 2018’s Call of Cthulhu? Whether you do or don’t, there’s another game in the works, based on H.P. Lovecraft’s Call of Cthulhu story. The difference is that, this time around, it’s a game of the movie.
As reported by Deadline, a trio of Chinese investment organisations are coming together to “..invest in verticals including film, TV, comics, games, collectibles, consumer goods.” That includes games based on several movies, including James Wan’s in-development Call of Cthulhu movie.
There have been other games inspired by the work of H.P. Lovecraft (who, let’s face it, had some seriously problematic views). But Call of Cthulhu: Dark Corners of the Earth and Call of Cthulhu were ‘official’ adaptions, drawing from both the story and the Chaosium tabletop RPG that it inspired. And before that there was Infogrames’ Call of Cthulhu: Prisoner of Ice.
We’re not going to spoil any of them but let’s just say that, generally, Lovecraft’s stories don’t have a happy ending. Given that James Wan is co-creator of the Saw franchise we’d be surprised if his movie’s conclusion was anything other than grim. So, reasonably, we’d expect the game to follow suit.
It’s early days for the movie, which we doubt will see the light of day until 2025 at the earliest. But we’re suckers for Lovecraftian tales so we’re definitely excited at the prospect of a new game featuring everyone’s favourite slimy slumberer.
And in the meantime, why not check out some of those other adaptations? Right now, they’re all heavily discounted at GOG. Here’s what’s on offer.
