Your first major task in Paleo Pines requires you to befriend a Styracosaurus, a large and spiny dinosaur. Here’s everything you need to know about doing so.
The first thing you need to know is you can’t befriend a Styracosaurus in Paleo Pines until you’ve done a related quest. Try as you might, there’s simply no way to befriend the dino until the game has prompted you to. So read on to find out exactly what you need to do.
Before you can tame one for yourself, you need to have had a conversation with Mari, the ranger, about taming a Styracosaurus. However, you may need to have tried to befriend one before this conversation becomes available. You’ll simply need to find Mari around the map – she often hangs out either at the treehouse or at a research point on the road just past the town.
Mari will tell you about Poppins, the cakes that Pippin sells in town. These are important tools when befriending dinosaurs – but they don’t all like the same flavours. After talking to Mari, go and talk to Pippin and ask for a new flavour of Poppin to be made: a Juicy Poppin. Pippin will give you a Juicy Poppin, and now you have everything you need to befriend a Styracosaurus.
How to befriend a Styracosaurus in Paleo Pines
First, you’ll need to open up your inventory (Y/triangle) and select your flute. Once selected, press A/X to use your flute. At the bottom of your screen, you’ll see the prompt to play a tune to capture a dinosaur’s attention. Walk up close to a Styracosaurus and play the simple tune – three red notes.
Now, pay attention to the Styracosaurus’ friend call. You’ll need to repeat it with your flute. One ring around the note means holding the button down to grow the note once, and two rings around the note means holding it down to grow it twice. Get the tune right, and you’ll be presented with a new menu: you can feed, soothe and befriend the Styracosaurus.
On the right of the screen, you’ll see a meter showing you the status of the dinosaur. The left-hand side shows the dinosaur is too relaxed, and the right-hand side shows it’s too excited. The green bit in the middle is where you want your needle to be. If you’re too far on the left, try feeding the dinosaur a snack – any snack, doesn’t have to be the Poppin. If you’re too far on the right, use the ‘soothe’ option.
Once your needle is in the green, try feeding the Styracosaurus the Juicy Poppin. If you’re successful, you’ll get a message saying the dinosaur trusts you. You can now pet it, and it’ll follow you home. Yay! If you’re not successful, try again – try to get the needle right in the middle of the green section.
