To find Dogmeat in Fallout 4 the first time, you need to head to the Red Rocket Truck Stop, located in the North West corner of the map, not too far from where you start. It’s possible to miss it if you’re just doing your own thing, so here’s how to find it.
Travel (either Fast Travel or walk if you’re doing it that way) to Sanctuary, your former home. Then, follow the path South-East, across the rickety bridge and past the dead raiders. You’ll see the Red Rocket Truck Stop in front of you, so head down there and interact with Dogmeat. You’ll then be able to take them with you.
You can only have one companion with you at a time, so if you pick up another, Dogmeat will be dismissed. You monster. But don’t worry, they’re not gone to good. The game will tell you where they’ve gone too, either the Red Rocket Truck Stop or one of your settlements. To reunited with them, go back to that location and talk to them and select the “Let’s Go” option for them to follow.
At least, that’s how it should work. In our experience, it can take a couple of goes before Dogmeat will follow again. Just click “Let’s Go” again and he should eventually get the message. And your other companion, if you have one, will be sent back to one of your settlements or so on.
