Find out how to use ranged weapons in Lords of Fallen, allowing you to take out pesky enemies from afar
In dark fantasy Soulslike Lords or the Fallen you’ll find yourself up against a variety of enemies. Most will try to engage you in close melee combat, but some will hang back and try to attack you from afar. This can be a real issue if you don’t have much room to dodge or you’re preoccupied with fighting other enemies. You might want to pick them off with ranged weapons yourself, then, but how do you use ranged weapons in Lords of the Fallen?
To use ranged weapons in Lords of the Fallen, unsurprisingly you first need to equip them. In your inventory you’ll find that you have a dedicated ranged weapon slot, just to the right of your left and right hand weapon slots. Select this ranged weapon slot to view the ranged weapons you can equip. At the start of the game this is likely to to just be your hands, which you can throw various items with. Equip these items, or ammo if you do have a ranged weapon to equip, to the slots below your melee and ranged weapon slots.
Once you have a ranged weapon equipped in Lords of the Fallen, you need to switch to it before you can use it. Look in the lower right hand corner of the screen – you should see an image of your lamp and also your ranged weapon, along with the button required to switch between them. Using a controller, you need to press up on the d-pad to select your ranged weapon, and down on the d-pad to select your lamp. With your ranged weapon selected, you can then press and hold the left trigger to raise it, before pressing the right shoulder button to fire it at a nearby target (perhaps lock-on to make sure you aim at your intended enemy), or the right trigger to manually aim. Release the right trigger to fire. You can press the face buttons to switch between the various ammo types you have equipped, too.
One thing to bear in mind when using ranged weapons – including thrown items – in Lords of the Fallen, is that instead of consuming things like rocks or bolts, you instead make use of a generic number of ammo rounds. These can be replenished by resting at a Vestige, dying, or using ammo pouches. Your usage of ranged weapons is limited, then, but at least you don’t have to keep buying arrows etc. Once you’ve found a special type of bolt, for example, you can use it whenever you please. Just be aware that it may cost more of your ranged ammo units to fire than a basic bolt.
