As scary as Lethal Company is, the Backrooms-inspired battle royale game The Bonerooms could soon be coming for its multiplayer PC horror game crown. And even if it doesn’t dislodge this indie smash, there’s the every chance we’ll be playing The Bonerooms to, er, death.
The Bonerooms is the work of Jason Smith, the maker of the Blood-inspired Cultic and he describes it as a “…. spooky/goofy mini-project.” It has you and several other players trapped in the “backrooms”, the never-ending, carpeted corridors that originated with a bland yet oddly offputing image.
Naturally, you’re not alone. But, instead of Lethal Company’s monsters or the Backrooms’ wiry entities, this game has you pursued by murderous skeletons. The good news is you collect Pac-Man style pills which you can trade for various items to keep you alive. Sounds like a cue for some teamwork, right?
That’s up to you. There’s nothing to stop you standing together but there can be only one winner so, at some point, your fellow survivors are going to have to die. What’s especially wicked is that you can troll your fellow players into thinking a skeleton’s nipping at their heels. The latest clip shows one player banging two bones together to create the exact sound that The Bonerooms’ skeletons make.
So when can you get your hands on this promisingly daft multiplayer horror? There’s no date as yet, but Smith has already released a prototype, which he made in less than a week. He says the release will be “hopefully relatively soon”. In the meantime, you can wishlist The Bonerooms on Steam, keep up with its developer on Twitter, and try the original prototype on Itch.io.
