2023 was a great year for videogames, but perhaps not a very good one for the videogame industry. Hopefully 2024 will be a little bit better overall. If there’s one thing that’s abundantly clear just days into it, however, it’s that there are plenty of great videogames on the way to look forward to. And no doubt there are many more that are as yet unannounced or not confirmed for 2024 yet.
We’ve put together a fairly short list of 18 of our most anticipated videogame releases of 2024, covering everything from the latest entry in one of the most popular fighting game series, to one of the most exciting and visually striking metroidvania games in recent years. So, if you wondering what videogames you’ve got to look forward to in 2024, scroll down and you might just find a few titles that catch your eye. We’d wager there’s something in store for everyone.
Prince of Persia: The Lost Crown
- Release Date: 18th January
- Formats: PS4, PS5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X/S, Switch & PC
We’ve been waiting for ages for a new Prince of Persia game, and so the announcement of The Lost Crown was a very nice surprise indeed. A 2.5D metroidvania adventure, it appears to be a bit of a departure from more recent entries in the series, but it looks right up our street. It’s not the only Prince of Persia game on the way, either, with a remake of the excellent Sands of Time also in the works. That’s not likely to see the light of day in 2024, though.

Tekken 8
- Release Date: 26th January

After new entries in two of the biggest fighting games series in 2023, we now have a new Tekken to look forward to in early 2024. Tekken 8 features next-gen visuals, a varied selection of modes, and more exciting mechanics than ever before. You don’t need to wait until the game launches to give it a try, either: check out the demo, available now on PS5, Xbox Series X/S and PC to see if it’s the fighting game for you.

Like a Dragon: Infinite Wealth
- Release Date: 26th January
- Formats: PS4, PS5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X/S & PC
You might still be making your way through Like a Dragon Gaiden: The Man Who Erased His Name, but there’s another entry in the long-running series on the way before the end of January. Infinite Wealth brings together both Kazuma Kiryu and Ichiban Kasuga, and allows both of them to escape Japan for a while. In Hawaii they’ll both find themselves embroiled in yet another escapade filled with violent encounters, insane twists and no doubt a minigame or two. We can’t wait.

Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice League

After suffering numerous delays, February 2024 finally sees the release of Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice League. Set in the Arkhamverse, while Suicide Squad can be played alone, it appears it will really shine when played in co-op, with villains such as Harley Quinn, Captain Boomerang, Deadshot and King Shark all being playable. It looks fast, it looks frantic, and it looks like a hell of a lot of fun. You might want to wait later into the year if you want to play it offline, though.

Banishers: Ghosts of New Eden

Developed by Don’t Nod of Life is Strange and Vampyr fame, we don’t really know all that much about Banishers: Ghosts of New Eden. It’s quickly become one of our most anticipated videogame releases on 2024, however, thanks to its unique premise. Its two protagonists, Antea and Red, are lovers and ghost-hunters, working to protect the land of the living. But after Antea is fatally wounded on the job, their work takes on a new twist. Needless to say, we’re really looking forward to this narrative-driven action RPG.

Ultros
- Release Date: 13th February

Like 2023, 2024 will no doubt be stacked with metroidvanias. We’re pretty sure that Ultros will stand out among them all, though. Not only does Ultros sport a very eye-catching art style, it has some interesting and unique mechanics, too. You develop your abilities by eating parts of your enemies and fruit grown when encountering fertile soil, for example. And, trapped in a mysterious world, you’ll find that you’re stuck in a loop, adding a roguelike element to the game. You can find out more in our preview.

Pacific Drive

A game where the car is definitely the star, Pacific Drive is easily one of our most anticipated releases of 2024. Stuck in a mysterious and rather hostile zone, it’s down to you to investigate and make your escape. You’re going to need to head out from the safety of your garage, collect resources, gather information, and do what you can to avoid your precious vehicle from being destroyed by everything from hostile creatures to extreme weather. We’ve never seen anything quite like it, and that makes it very alluring indeed.

Final Fantasy VII Rebirth

The second part of the Final Fantasy VII remake/sequel arrives this February, and promises more of an open world experience. Travelling with Cloud, Tifa and co., what surprises are in store? We’re excited to find out, while visiting areas of the original game reimagined in stunning 3D. This is easily one of our most anticipated videogame releases of 2024, and even if it’s simply as good as the first part we’ll be extremely happy indeed. We’re hoping it will be better though, and there’s a good chance it will be.

Alone in the Dark

Another game that’s been delayed and then delayed again, Alone in the Dark will hopefully have its time to shine. A reboot of the iconic horror series, Alone in the Dark stars David Harbour and Jodie Comer, who are both playable in order to allow you to experience the game’s events from different perspectives. With its atmospheric visuals and doom jazz soundtrack, this is a survival horror we’re excited to dive into. It promises to offer some engaging puzzles, too.

Dragon’s Dogma II

If you’re a fan of fantasy, Dragon’s Dogma II could prove to be your game of the year. Building upon the foundations laid by the original game, Dragon’s Dogma II aims to be bigger and better. After creating your character you’ll be able to explore a vast world, doing battle against all sorts of monsters alongside a number of computer controlled pawns. Chances are it’s the type of game we’re going to get lost in, and with a such a large amount of freedom and dynamism, chances are no two players’ adventures will be quite the same.

Rise of the Ronin

Developed by Team Ninja and exclusive to PS5, Rise of the Ronin has a hint of the excellent Nioh about it. This open-world action RPG seems like it will have more emphasis on telling a story, however, and it will unfold in different ways depending on your choices and actions. We have good news for those who found the Nioh games too challenging, too: you’ll apparently be able to adjust the game’s difficulty, giving you more of a chance of surviving its encounters.

Eiyuden Chronicle: Hundred Heroes

We’ve been waiting years for a new Suikoden game, and now we’re getting the next best thing: a spiritual sequel. Eiyuden Chronicle: Hundred Heroes is being put together by many of those who worked on some of the best Suikoden games, and seeks to offer a similar experience. That means there’ll be a intriguing political story to unravel, a base to build, and many, many allies to recruit. We’re really hoping this one lives up to our expectations.

Warhammer 40,000: Space Marine II

The original Warhammer 40,000: Space Marine was a bit underappreciated. Hopefully this sequel will receive more love – and deserve it. It certainly looks like it’s going to offer a good time, with its large-scale battles and gritty visuals. Fighting against the Tyranid Hordes, Warhammer 40,000: Space Marine II looks like it’s going to be very gory and intense. And what has really piqued our interest is the fact that you can play it in co-op.
Test Drive Unlimited: Solar Crown

We have fond memories of playing the original Test Drive Unlimited all those years ago, before the Forza Horizon series became the king of open-world racers. While it’s unlikely that the upcoming Test Drive Unlimited: Solar Crown will steal back the crown, we’re still anticipating its release nonetheless. Developed by KT Racing, it certainly looks the part, and offers a stunning recreation of Hong Kong Island for players to explore. Everything hinges on how exciting and rewarding the racing action proves to be.
Star Wars Outlaws

EA has delivered some engrossing Star Wars games in recent years, and now it’s time for Ubisoft to try its hand. Star Wars Outlaws promises something new and a little bit different in the Star War universe, with players taking control of a likable rogue, Kay Vess, who plans and performs heists alongside her cute pet, Nix. An open-word adventure, players will explore iconic planets such as Tatooine but also visit some that have never been seen before, too. We just hope it doesn’t get delayed into 2025.
Senua’s Saga: Hellblade II

Ninja Theory’s Hellblade: Senua’s Sacrifice was quite the experience when it released in 2017. Now, having been acquired my Microsoft, all hopes are on Ninja Theory delivering a sequel that’s bigger and somehow bolder. If there’s one thing for sure, Senua’s Saga: Hellblade II is going to be a visual tour-de-force. We just hope the gameplay will have been expanded upon to carry more of a AAA experience. But we have confidence in Ninja Theory – it delivered the excellent DmC, after all.
Gori: Cuddly Carnage

A game that puts you in control of a cat that rides a hoverboard, Gori: Cuddly Carnage is utterly absurd but also a hell of a lot of fun. In a world where toys have mutated into things of nightmares and turned hostile, it’s up to the titular Gori to fight for humanity. The action here is fast-paced and very over-the-top, with Gori using his hoverboard and more to slice, dice and bash those who would see him dead. We went hands-on with the title a short while ago, and found it very entertaining indeed.
The Plucky Squire

The Plucky Squire is just the type of game you’d expect from publisher Devolver Digital. In this charming magical adventure players will take control of Jot and his friends, who have just discovered that a whole new world exists outside of the pages that have previously confined them. What follows is a journey that demands players to jump between 2D and 3D world while engaging in a variety of activities ranging from solving puzzles to using jetpacks. What’s not to love?
