Released late last year, Rogue Flight is a genuine treat for arcade space shooter fans. And now it’s just got a little bit better, thanks to a new Void Challenge mode that will not only entertain players, but also give them an opportunity to win real-life prizes if they’re skilled enough.
It has to be said, though, that Void Challenge is a weird one. You see, it’s only available every weekend, from Friday to Sunday. So, it’s perhaps best to think of it as a weekend treat, where you can show off your skills that honed through through the week.
In any case, jump into Void Challenge mode and you’ll find an intense experience where you start with just 60 seconds on the clock. By achieving and maintaining a combo, however, you can freeze time, and so the ultimate goal is to get as high a combo as you can so that you can score big in the available time.
Making things a little more interesting is that Void Challenge mode will change depending on how much progress you’ve made in the main Rogue Flight campaign. Those who haven’t completed it yet, for example, will start with the basic Vulcan canon and whatever upgrades they have applied, while those who have completed New Game + will start with all the weapons unlocked as well as a Seraph upgrade in addition to any upgrades they have applied.
The enemies and encounters will differ, too, as well as the new song, Ashes by Rinn, that is played while in the mode. An instrumental version of the song will play for those still making their through the main game, while those who have completed New Game + will hear a version with vocals. And those who play in retro mode will hear a 16-bit PCM version.
Needless to say, Void Challenge mode sounds pretty intriguing, and once a month players will also have the opportunity to win real-life prizes. On the third weekend of every month, players are invited to take a screenshot of their best run and either post them on social media (X, Facebook, Instagram or Bluesky) using the hashtags #IntoTheVoid & #RogueFlight or send them directly to ‘[email protected]’.
Winners may then be selected, who will be notified within seven days, and prizes include everything from physical copies of the game to a 3D printed mode of the Arrow, the ship featured within the game. So, if you love Rogue Flight, be sure to get stuck into Void Challenge mode and show off your best scores.
