Marvel’s Spider-Man 2, which launched on Friday, has had a very good weekend indeed: it’s the best PS5 boxed launch of the year. And such a launch has garnered it the coveted number 1 spot in the UK sales charts, beating out Super Mario Wonder.
The data comes from Gfk, by way of GamesIndustry.biz. It also reveals that Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 has sold 41% more boxed copies than Spider-Man: Miles Morales at launch, which is a staggering amount – especially considering Miles Morales launched on both PS4 and PS5. (And Spider-Man: Miles Morales is still a very good game, we should add.)
On the flip-side, physical launch sales of Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 are 38% lower than those for the first Spider-Man, which released back in 2018. However, as GI rightfully notes, that’s probably down to a huge increase in digital sales since then. A lot has changed in five years. And we don’t yet have digital sales figures for Spider-Man 2 to compare – but we imagine they’ll be very high.

Despite missing out on the number one spot in the charts, though, Super Mario Wonder is still doing well. It’s the biggest 2D Mario launch in UK history, and is only slightly behind the sales figures for 2017’s Super Mario Odyssey. Like most Mario games, we imagine it’s going to keep a spot in the charts for a long time to come. Heck, it’s been six years since its release, and Mario Kart 8 Deluxe is still in the top 10.
