As much as I love sprawling open-world action-adventure games that I can really sink my teeth into, I also love having games that I can just put on for 10 minutes or so and have a nice chill time with. Super Rolling Heroes Deluxe from Solid Neon Games is one such title, available on pretty much every format you can imagine. Though that’s not to say that it doesn’t offer any challenge.
You main task in Super Rolling Heroes Deluxe is to control a spherical alien creature as it rolls down a hill, aiming to crash into a gem that’s at the bottom. Making things a little more complicated, however, are the numerous obstacles in your path. Some, such as trees, will simply slow you down should you crash into them. But others, like spiked fences, will cause your alien to pop should you touch them, forcing you to restart and try again.
While Super Rolling Heroes Deluxe defaults to its Hard mode, you can disable this to make the game more relaxing if you wish. But while you’ll find less obstacles in your path, you’ll also have less opportunity to earn the currency that allows you to unlock customisation items for your alien. While on Hard mode, you’ll be rewarded for hitting a number of obstacles as you roll down each hill as well as beating a target time. But on the easier mode, rewards are only available for hitting targets.
There are 60 levels overall, and while they’re somewhat challenging right from the off, new elements are frequently added to keep you on your toes. Some levels require you to use your alien like a bowling ball to hit all targets, for example, striking certain items at just the right angle to send them flying into them. Learning to effectively control the speed of your rolling hero also becomes more important: you might be tempted to hold the brake so you have more control while descending, but sometimes you’ll need to speed up or boost to clear a gap, or perhaps backflip to move back up a hill just a little.
The points you earn while playing can be used to buy blind bags, each giving you a random cosmetic item that you can use to personalise your rotund alien. These include facial expressions, pants, t-shirts and more, truly allowing you to make your alien your own. Is there any point to it? No. But it’s fun nonetheless. I just wish you could open more than one blind bag at a time, as sitting through the reveal time and time again can be a bit tedious.
There are some other issues as well. While the premise of Super Rolling Heroes Deluxe is relatively simple, it’s a shame there’s no tutorial to teach players the basics. You’re not told that you’re rewarded for hitting targets, for example; you just have to figure it out for yourself. The difficulty of the levels is also a bit erratic. You can go from completing numerous levels that don’t put up much of a challenge, to one that will make you curse, and then back again. Overall though, Super Rolling Heroes Deluxe is a delight to play thanks to its charming visuals and simple but enjoyable gameplay.
Super Rolling Heroes Deluxe Review
Super Rolling Heroes Deluxe is a simple game with a simple premise: roll a spherical alien down a hill to hit a gem at the bottom while avoiding troublesome obstacles. It's challenging by default, especially if you also try to meet optional speed and destruction targets as you go, but thanks to being able to drop down to an easier difficulty level it remains fun for all.8out of 10
