1. Doom Eternal
The latest entry in the DOOM series is also quite possibly the best. Well, as long as you value fast-paced first-person shooter action. That is to say that DOOM Eternal turns down the horror elements exhibited by some of its predecessors, and turns up the crazy to eleven. To stay alive in DOOM Eternal you need to keep on the move, using your athletic abilities to stay out of harm’s way. You also need to make effective use of the tools available to you, such as your chainsaw when you require more ammo, or the ice bomb when its advantageous to stop enemies in their tracks and gain health by shattering them. One of the best FPS games on PS5, for sure, unfortunately there’s no physical version of DOOM Eternal on the format. If you buy a boxed PS4 version you can make use of a free upgrade, however.

2. Warstride Challenges
There’s a good chance that Warstride Challenges has flown under your radar. For one, it’s not a big name AAA title. And two, it released in one of the numerous busy periods of 2023. Thankfully you’re up to the task, being able to make use of three schools of magic while most can only use one. You’ll need to switch between these three schools as the situation demands, with some being more appropriate against certain enemies. Your spells can be used to solve puzzles and help traverse the environment, too, with Immortals of Aveum having some adventure elements to help balance its onslaught of action. 4. Shadow Warrior 3
Laden with humour, Shadow Warrior 3 won’t be to everybody’s tastes. Those who find it amusing or can shrug off its jokes, however, are likely to have a hell of a lot of fun with it. Seemingly taking inspiration from DOOM Eternal, Shadow Warrior 3 gives protagonist Lo Wang a range of skills that add a layer of strategy to the gameplay. It’s important to keep on the move, using tools like the grappling hook to quickly gain higher ground. And employing brutal melee executions to finish weakened enemies has a wealth of benefits, such as providing you with powerful temporary weapons. While it’s not the biggest FPS game on PS5, it makes up for it in entertainment value.

5. Boltgun
Retro-styled first-person shooters are all the rage right now, and one of the best is available on PS5. It’s Warhammer 40,000: Boltgun, a game that puts you in control of a hardened Space Marine fighting against the forces of Chaos. Moving from one level to the next, you’ll face off against a wide range of enemies, ranging from Chaos Space Marines to demons of various shapes and sizes. Thankfully you have an extensive arsenal with which to take them apart. Your Boltgun does the job quite nicely, but heavier weapons are also a joy to use. Our personal favourite, however, is the Chainsword that never leaves your side. Ultimately, this is great whether you’re a fan of Warhammer 40,000 or not.
6. RoboCop: Rogue City
Remember RoboCop? He’s back in a new game, and if you’re a fan of violent first-person shooters you’re going to love it. Developed by Teyon, the studio behind the surprisingly enjoyable Terminator: Resistance, RoboCop: Rogue City does a great job of making you feel like you’re actually taking control of a robotic law enforcement officer. You’ll spend your time investigating crime scenes, making use of your advanced computational features to highlight objects of interest. To offset that, you’ll also find yourself engaged in lots of firefights, where your customisable pistol quickly becomes your best friend. It’s here where you’ll have the most fun, popping heads and throwing criminals out of high-rise windows.

7. Metal: Hellsinger
Metal: Hellsinger adds a musical twist to the first-person shooter genre. Taking you down into hell, blasting enemies with a variety of weapons is just as important here as it in in any other FPS game on PS5. But adding another layer of complexity is the fact that you need to do it in sync with whatever music track is playing at the time. Stick to the beat and you’ll increase your combo, making it easier to take down the enemies before you. Mess up, and you’ll either be a sitting duck or have to pump more bullets into your enemies, putting a damper on your performance. It’s a twist that some will love, but it might also alienate some players. In any case, if you’re after the best FPS games on PS5, it’s certainly worth giving a try.
