1. Halo Infinite
This latest entry in the Halo franchise goes back to its roots, with the action taking place on yet another Halo ring. That means the scenery is very familiar at times, but the gameplay has some meaningful additions that keep it feeling fresh.
Master Chief now has a grappling hook, for example. It allows him to quickly scale the environment, pull weapons towards him, and even dash at enemies before hitting them with a mighty melee attack. The biggest change, however, is that much of the action now takes place in what is essentially an open world. You’re free to go straight to the next mission if you wish, but it’s worth taking time to capture new forward operating bases, take out high-value targets, and more.

2. DOOM Eternal
Featuring a truly epic campaign and an original multiplayer mode, DOOM Eternal is undoubtedly one of the best FPS games on Xbox right now. And if you have an Xbox Series X, it looks absolutely amazing.
Making your through expansive levels, you’ll find yourself up against a wide range of demons. You’ll need to figure out their weak spots and capitalise upon them to succeed on higher difficulty levels, and you’ll always want to stay on the move.
With lots of upgrades and collectibles to find, DOOM Eternal has plenty of replayablity. Though ripping and tearing a legion of demons is fun enough in itself to want to return time and time again. So, if you want the best first-person shooter games on Xbox, you need DOOM Eternal in your collection. It’s as simple as that. There are numerous expansions available now, too. 3. Warhammer 40,000: Boltgun
Want a first-person shooter that’s brand new but that looks and plays like a blast from the past? Check Warhammer 40,000: Boltgun out.
Warhammer 40,000: Boltgun puts in the protective armour of a Space Marine. But you’ll need it, what with you going up against Chaos Space Marines and the daemons of Chaos across a range of locations. What’s really neat here is that you genuinely feel like a walking tank, with an arsenal of weapons that can decimate nearly anything brave enough to stand before you. You even have a chainsword that you make use of to tear enemies apart.
Ultimately, it may look and feel a bit old-fashioned, but Warhammer 40,000: Boltgun is easily one of the best FPS games available on Xbox consoles right now. It’s just so refreshingly old-school and well-made.
4. Call of Duty: Modern Warfare
The Call of Duty: Modern Warfare series has been rebooted, and while there are multiple entries available now the first is still the best.
While it’s quite short, Call of Duty: Modern Warfare’s single-player campaign is full of thrills and spills. Then when you’re done with that you can team up with others online and complete a variety of challenging Spec Ops missions, or throw yourself into its traditional competitive multiplayer mode. Call of Duty: Modern Warfare truly has something for everybody.
It’s a couple of years old now, but Call of Duty: Modern Warfare still looks great if you’re playing on Xbox One X or Xbox Series X, though it’s no slouch on a standard Xbox One or Xbox Series S, either. It’s definitely worth adding to your collection if you’re a first-person shooter fan. Though be aware: it’ll eat up around 200GB of your valuable hard drive space.

5. Metro Exodus
With horror and survival elements, Metro Exodus is one of the most tense first-person shooters available on Xbox platforms.
More open than its predecessors, Metro Exodus has you travelling through beautiful and atmospheric locales as you unravel a narrative filled with hair-raising situations. While you’ll find yourself battling against fellow humans, it’s the monsters that you encounter on your adventure that really make it stand out though – they’re just as grotesque as ever. Perhaps even more so.

6. Warstride Challenges
Warstride Challenges is unlike anything else on this list, offering short but sweet combat challenges rather than letting you loose in expansive levels.
Things start our rather simple, with you just having to make your way to the end of a corridor while taking out a single enemy. Soon, however, you’ll find yourself having to effectively switch between weapons, prioritise targets, hit switches, and a whole lot more. The way Warstride Challenges introduces all these new elements is masterful, never overwhelming you and always adding something new to keep you invested. And thanks to a speedrun element, it has that “just one more go” factor that keeps you up into the early hours of the morning.
While every other game on this list is playable on Xbox One, Warstride Challenges is only available on Xbox Series consoles so bear that in mind. If you do have either an Xbox Series S or X, however, you should definitely give it a go. It’s quite cheap, too.
7. Borderlands 3
If you like to loot just as much as you like to shoot, Borderlands 3 is the Xbox game for you. With multiple characters to choose from, each with their own skills and perks, Borderlands 3 is primarily an action RPG. Played from first-person perspective and featuring more guns than you can count, however, it’s also a bloody good first-person shooter.
Playing alone or with friends in co-op, you’ll visit a number of planets as you progress through the game’s story, with plenty of side quests to complete along the way. How much fun you’ll have will depend on the crazy weapons you find though, so loot as much as you can and hope you get something special.

8. Far Cry 6
The latest entry in the Far Cry series is perhaps the most expansive and enjoyable yet.
Far Cry 6 invites players to Yara, a tropical paradise under the grip of a dictator. It’s the actions of this dictator – Anton Castillio, played by the brilliant Giancarlo Esposito – that leads to you, Dani Rojas, joining local guerrilla fighters in an attempt to liberate Yara. But of course, it won’t be easy.
Like all Far Cry games, Far Cry 6 blends first-person shooter action with stealth while also adding RPG elements. You’ll need to explore the island, completing missions as you go in order to bolster your skills and your arsenal, giving you more of a chance of surviving your fight against El Presidente. It makes for a varied experience, but one that’s always fun. If you like what you play, there’s a wealth of additional content to jump into now as well.

9. Rage 2
What do you get if you cross the Avalanche open-world game formula with id combat? Rage 2, that’s what. Rage 2 lets you loose in a post-apocalyptic world, and whether you plough through the story or spend time exploring and upgrading your main character is up to you. It’s worth taking your time and maximising the powers and weapons at your disposal though, because they make combat absolutely exhilarating.
While Rage 2’s open world was a bit sterile at launch, updates have since made it a little more lively. It has to be said that it looks pretty nice too, and being able to drive around in a heavily armed vehicle is fun. Definitely check Rage 2 out if you’re after the best FPS games on Xbox. Especially considering how stupidly cheap you can get it for now.

10. Bulletstorm: Full Clip Edition
It may be fairly old now, but Bulletstorm is a great game that has been lovingly remastered for Xbox One. And thanks to backwards compatibility, it’s also playable on Xbox Series X/S.
Bulletstorm: Full Clip Edition mixes insane action with humorous dialogue, making it an absolute riot. As you move from one hair-raising situation to the next, your task isn’t only to kill, but to kill with skill, with you being awarded points depending on how you’ve decimated those who stand against you.
With an energy whip you can pull enemies towards you, or even pound the ground to send them up into the air. When close, you can introduce them to your boot, too. And did we mention that each weapon also has a powerful secondary shot mode?
