Is there anything better than being a detective in a video game? We don’t think so — especially not when it’s done right. Hunting for clues and piecing together a mystery can be seriously rewarding, even if you’re not technically a detective. Here, we’ve rounded up the best mystery/detective games that are available on PlayStation Plus. So if you’re a PS Plus Extra or Premium member, you can play all these games at no extra cost.
The games we’ve selected put you in the shoes of someone at the heart of a mystery. In some games they’re an actual detective. In other games they’re simply someone searching for answers — but for all intents and purposes they’re taking on the role of a detective. Every game on this list offers a fantastic narrative filled with mystery and intrigue — the key to any good detective story. If you’ve got a PlayStation Plus Extra subscription, then, read on to find out the best mystery/detective games you can add to your library on PS4 and PS5.
1. Call of the Sea
- Available on: PS4 and PS5
You’re not a detective in Call of the Sea, but you’re very much at the heart of a mystery. Playing as Norah, you’re on the trail of your missing husband — a trail which has brought you to a mysterious island in the middle of the Pacific Ocean. Her husband is nowhere to be found, but there are signs of life everywhere: it’s clear he was there, but as for where he is now? Norah has no idea.
It’s down to you to explore the island, uncover the mysteries that await as you delve deeper and, ultimately, find out what happened to Norah’s husband. With a running time of around five hours, Call of the Sea always keeps you on your toes and will keep you gripped from start to finish.

2. Call of Cthulhu
- Available on: PS4
In Call of Cthulhu you are a detective. Well, a private investigator. As PI Pierce, you’re sent to the mysterious island of Darkwater Island. Dark and foreboding, it’s clear that nothing is quite as it seems on this island, and with the death of the Hawkins family to investigate, Pierce has his work cut out for him.
On Darkwater Island, Pierce will need to explore and gather together clues as to what happened — but in doing so, he’ll also encounter more than he bargained for, with cosmic horror and conspiracies aplenty. He might not even be able to trust his own mind once the island gets its nasty tendrils in him. If you like dark, twisty mysteries, then Call of Cthulhu is one of the best detective games you can play on PS Plus Extra — it’s well worth adding to your library.

3. Deliver Us The Moon
- Available on: PS4 and PS5
Deliver Us The Moon isn’t a detective game in the traditional sense. While there are some puzzles to solve here, much of the game unfolds as you simply explore. But in doing so, you’ll be uncovering a mystery: you see, the whole of Deliver Us The Moon is about trying to uncover what has happened on a now-abandoned space station. Previously used to send energy from the moon to the earth, the station is empty — and it’s clear something terrible happened. It’s down to you to take on the role of detective and figure out exactly what.
Atmospheric and tense, Deliver Us The Moon is absolutely fantastic from start to finish. Its puzzles will keep you engaged, but it’s the story that will grip you to your chair. It’s told mostly in notes and audio recordings you’ll find around the environment, so it’s worth poking around everywhere to ensure you don’t miss anything important. And when you’re done with this one, you can pick up its sequel, Deliver Us Mars. Both are available on PS Plus Extra, and both are incredible mystery/detective games.

4. Paradise Killer
- Available on: PS4 and PS5
Now, this is a real detective mystery. Albeit one of the most bizarre you’ll ever play — but that’s one of the reasons why we love Paradise Killer so much. It’s set upon a strange island that regenerates every few millennia — and the next regeneration is almost upon us. But the day before the island’s rebirth, into the so-called Perfect 25, one of the island’s Council members is murdered.
As a result, investigator Lady Love Dies has been summoned from her previous exile and tasked with solving the murder. As Lady Love Dies, you’ll need to talk to everyone on the island, figure out the truth from the lies, and find out where to point the finger of blame. What’s particularly neat here is that the decision is yours and yours alone — but if you get it wrong, you’ll have to deal with the consequences.

5. Disco Elysium
- Available on: PS4 and PS5
Calling Disco Elysium a mystery/detective game is a little reductive: after all, this huge RPG is so much more. But you do play as a detective, and therefore interrogating people, investigating scenes and solving murders are all part and parcel of the experience. It’s an incredibly far-reaching detective RPG, too, with many ways to approach the game and many different options to make as you play. Your outcome will likely be different from someone else’s, and so it’s important to think carefully about every action you undertake here.
Disco Elysium is set in the dark city of Revachol. It’s a real world filled with real characters — all of whom are fully voiced, and many of whom will have important information for you. Who you talk to and where you go is entirely up to you, but it’s safe to say that exploring Revachol and speaking to the people you come across is key to playing. You could become a hero detective — or your whole world could come crumbling down. It all depends on how you play, and that’s what makes this one of the best detective games you can play on PlayStation Plus Extra.
