What do you do when you can’t get your hands on a set of Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 PS5 faceplates? You make your own! Okay, that’s not an option that’s open to most of us. But one accessory manufacturer is making a set of Spider-Man 2 style faceplates and they are absolutely trolling the hell out of Sony over them.
If you missed the news, Sony unveiled a special Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 PlayStation 5, with custom controllers and Venomized faceplates. They also made the faceplates and controllers available separately, and they went on sale at the end of July. They sold out almost immediately and are being sold on eBay for around a 50% markup.
Dbrand has seen an opportunity, thumbing their nose at Sony with their ‘Arachnoplates’, remarking, “The [POPULAR VIDEO GAME CONSOLE] maker [MEGACORP] failed to produce enough stock of their [LICENSED VIDEO GAME] side panels Thanks for dropping the ball, you [SERIES OF EXPLETIVES].”
Give how much legal muscle Sony and Marvel have between them, that seems like a risky idea. As reported by Gamesindustry.biz, Sony threatened Dbrand with legal action when they first launched their line of third party faceplates. They modified the design to less resemble Sony’s own design but we wouldn’t be surprised if Sony has kept one eye on the company.

On the other hand, it’s marketing genius. No-one’s fooled into thinking that Dbrand is somehow edgy for doing this but we’ve absolutely got our popcorn ready to see if Sony does bring the hammer. And we’re talking about it, which is exactly what Dbrand wants.
As for the faceplates? They’re pretty cool, though this is likely just a pre-release render. Dbrand has, wisely, not attempted to include any kind of logo. But we absolutely think ‘Spider-Man’ when we look at these. You can pre-order them from Dbrand’s own site, with a shipping date of October 20th.
