Godzilla x Kong: Supernova Could Bring One Of The Deadliest Kaiju To The MonsterVerse

Godzilla x Kong is set to return to the big screen yet again. There are rumors that a deadly kaiju will be joining the reunion.

Godzilla and King Kong are the two titans in Legendary Pictures and Warner Bros.’ cinematic universe dubbed MonsterVerse. Godzilla made its debut in the 2014 movie Godzilla, while King Kong did the same in Kong: Skull Island, released in 2017. In 2021, fans were treated to the first crossover of the two giants in Godzilla vs. Kong. 2024’s Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire , although both received mixed reviews from fans. Critics loved their visual effects and monster battles. However, they felt there was not enough time for human character development. They also had some issues with overall coherence. Despite that, the first Godzilla x Kong movie broke records by being the highest-grossing film in the MonsterVerse. It even surpassed the initial projections in its opening weekend. So, another sequel is given, and a new report claims that another kaiju will join the pair.

The Godzilla x Kong sequel has received its official title—Godzilla x Kong: Supernova. Although the details about the upcoming film have remained under wraps, its title is enough to stir excitement and spark fan theories, especially on who will be the antagonist against Godzilla and Kong. According to Collider, fans are speculating that one of the deadliest kaiju—Destoroyah—will be introduced in the upcoming movie. Destoroyah made its debut in 1995’s Godzilla vs. Destoroyah. Although he hasn’t appeared in MonsterVerse, there are already clues that he could join the franchise soon.

Destoroyah Would Be A Perfect Addition To The MonsterVerse Alongside Godzilla And Kong

In MonsterVerse’s Godzilla: King of the Monsters, the U.S. Military launches the Oxygen Destroyer to defeat King Ghidorah, but it fails. The Oxygen Destroyer, a fictional super weapon, was introduced in Toho’s Godzilla movie and was used to kill the original Godzilla in 1954. However, in the Godzilla vs. Destoroyah storyline, Destoroyah is a direct byproduct of the Oxygen Destroyer.

Godzilla vs. Destoroyah is produced by Toho Studios in Japan, while Godzilla vs. Kong is part of the MonsterVerse. Although they are from different continuities, they share thematic elements. Both explore the themes of nature’s response to human action. In Godzilla vs. Destoroyah, Godzilla faces a biological weapon born from his own death. In Godzilla vs. Kong, the two Titans face one of humanity’s creations —Mechagodzilla, a mechanized Titan in the MonsterVerse. In the Godzilla x Kong sequel, the Oxygen Destroyer is the strongest link to introduce Destoroyah in the film. Bringing Destoroyah onscreen also makes sense because his presence is a logical evolution from using the Oxygen Destroyer in the 2019 movie.

Director Adam Wingard, who helmed the first Godzilla x Kong movie, admitted that Godzilla vs. Destoroyah was among his favorites because it moved him emotionally. He admitted that if he were to film another movie in the MonsterVerse, he wanted to achieve the same profound connection with Godzilla as a character. Many took it as a hint that he would bring Destoroyah to the franchise.. Unfortunately, Wingard is not attached to the Godzilla x Kong sequel as Grant Sputore will direct Supernova. Hopefully, he shares Wingard’s desire to bring Destoroyah back to the big screen.

Godzilla x Kong: Supernova will hit theaters on March 26, 2027.
