Gundam's Most Beloved Mecha Get Modern Updates on Classic Designs With 2025's New 'Universe' Series Release

Taking mecha from throughout the Mobile Suit Gundam franchise, the Gundam Universe has delivered modernized takes on classic mobile suits full of articulation. Now, the latest entries in the series are set to «renew» fan interest with new and improved frames for the most beloved mobile suit mecha.

The cutting-edge new «Universal Reaction Frame» for the Gundam Universe line is set to give fans even greater collectibles, with these toys boasting the line’s best array of articulation and malleability. Three of them hail from different Gundam anime, giving the next level in engineering to mobile suits from various generations. Set to be released later this year, these collectibles are certain to be some of the best and most affordable toys in the Gundam Universe line yet.

Gundam Universe Unleashes Increased Articulation With Universal Reaction Frame

Three of the newest figures in the Gundam Universe toy line are toys for Gundam Barbatos, God Gundam and the classic RX-78-2 Gundam, with these respectively being from Mobile Suit Gundam: Iron-Blooded Orphans, Mobile Fighter G Gundam and the original Mobile Suit Gundam. These all use the new Universal Reaction Frame for the toy line, which increases the already incredible range of articulation seen in the toys. Unlike most of the collectibles in the series, which are buildable plastic model kits, these are 150-160mm pre-assembled action figures that require no such construction. They do, however, come with several unique accessories and weapons based on their particular anime. For instance, the Barbatos has a mace and a long sword, as well as a Smoothbore Cannon and two different kinds of interchangeable wrist parts for its left and right arms.

The RX-78-2 has three types of wrist parts for each arm, as well as a Beam Rifle, a shield, two Beam Saber effects, a Hyper Bazooka, the Gundam Hammer and a Beam Javelin, making it packed with weapons to take on enemy Zakus. On the other hand, the God Gundam has the same number of wrist parts, interchangeable chest parts and two God Slash swords. Conversely, God Gundam and the Barbatos have Tamashii STAGE joints, whereas the RX-78-2 comes with Soul STAGE joints with which to display the figure. They’re all made of PVC and ABS and are scheduled to be released in October 2025, with the price being 4,400 yen (~US$31). This is roughly around the same price point as what fans are used to, albeit with an upgraded frame for even better action posing.
