‘Have A Feeling We May Never Know For Sure’ Fans Think Yellowjackets Season 4 Should Leave One Mystery Alone (& They’re Right About That)

'Have A Feeling We May Never Know For Sure' Fans Think Yellowjackets Season 4 Should Leave One Mystery Alone (& They're Right About That)

Yellowjackets season 3 ended by sharing answers about Pit Girl and hinting that if the show gets renewed for season 4, adult Shauna Sadecki (Melanie Lynskey) will be front and center. Ever since the Showtime drama premiered in November 2021, fans have been captivated by the dark story of a teenage girls soccer team who get lost in the Canadian woods. The characters experience terrible horrors and do things they never imagined they would, and as their dynamic shifts, they constantly turn on each other.

The bleak and violent series has talented cast members and fans get to know two versions of each character: adolescent and adult. Yellowjackets has always excelled at sharing a few different mysteries in each season, but if Yellowjackets season 4 happens, some fans think that one big question can remain unanswered.

Fans Don't Think Yellowjackets Season 4 Should Explain The Show's Supernatural Elements

As soon as the girls’ soccer team ends up stranded in the Canadian woods, there appears to be a strange and unsettling presence. Teenage Lottie Matthews (Courtney Eaton) thinks The Wilderness, as the girls call it, is real, and she’s stubborn and unwilling to listen to any rational discussions. From Lottie chanting in French to all the times she calls The Wilderness «It,» these are some of the darkest and most haunting moments from Yellowjackets. The most unforgettable and well-crafted episodes of the Showtime series find the teenagers unable to discern visions from reality, and that’s definitely compelling.

But while fans have wondered since the pilot episode if there really are supernatural elements, many viewers think Yellowjackets season 4 will continue to feature these scary moments without giving a rational explanation. Redditor @Dear-Potential-4682 wrote in a Reddit thread:

«Have a feeling we may never know for sure what is supernatural and isn’t? Idk, feel like the show may end this way…»

Redditor @zavant5303 replied:

«They’ll never say if it was supernatural or not. And I like that.»

In another thread, Redditor @hauntingvacay96 wrote, «I hope and think it will stay ambiguous.» The fan explained that this allows the show to ask questions about the «morality» of the characters’ actions. This is a great point, and the show would arguably suffer if fans were given a yes or no answer about whether these forces are real. In contrast to fast-paced procedurals like The Rookie, Yellowjackets doesn’t need to wrap up certain plotlines.

Like the best TV dramas that have been released in the past few decades, Yellowjackets features tough characters who don’t fit into easy categories or boxes. While most of the characters are harsh, cruel, and violent, they each have sympathetic moments, and viewers get to know their inner lives. For some, asking if the supernatural parts are real is the wrong question. The theme of the series is, can someone ever get over major trauma, and is it possible to move forward and forget the past? It’s also fascinating to watch the adult timeline and see how the characters, who have been through similar terrible experiences and done horrible things, split up and come together.

Yellowjackets benefits from the long-form storytelling of television and doesn’t need to give easy answers like the satisfying end of a horror movie. While a film feels incomplete without sharing that a killer wanted revenge or a ghost had unfinished business, a TV series can keep some storylines vague, and the story still feels powerful and meaningful.

Yellowjackets Star Simone Kessel Commented On The Show's Supernatural Tone

If fans have thought long and hard about whether there is a ghost or supernatural force in the woods, the actors on the Showtime drama have done the same. In an interview with Variety in May 2023, Simone Kessell, who plays adult Lottie Matthews, answered a question about the paranormal aspects of the series. Kessell said:

«I agree with you, because I don’t think it’s a supernatural thing either. I don’t think Lottie’s working in another realm — maybe young Lottie is. I think these are all mechanisms they’ve put in place to survive.»

Kessell touched on the trauma that the girls have been through and added:

«I think it’s their karma catching up. I think they’re so warped from what has happened.»

While there are many shows like Yellowjackets and several great coming-of-age dramas, the unique nature of the Showtime drama keeps fans coming back and also makes them hopeful for a fourth season renewal. The two different timelines, the captivating setting of the wilderness, and the mysteries like the Antler Queen and the Pit Girl set the series apart from lesser-quality shows about teenagers.
