HBO’s Harry Potter Cast Finds Its Hogwarts Staff, Including Snape & McGonagall

HBO has finally announced the first series regulars, who are joining the Harry Potter cast for the highly-anticipated series adaptation of J.K. Rowling’s beloved children’s fantasy novels. Production is expected to begin sometime this year

The series is described as a “decade-long” project, with each season expected to adapt one book in Rowling’s acclaimed book series. At the moment, the casting search for the next Harry Potter, Hermione Granger, and Ron Weasly is still underway in the U.K. and Ireland. The chosen child actors must be aged 9 to 11 by the time the show starts filming.

Who is joining the Harry Potter cast?

Set as series regulars in the Harry Potter show, Golden Globe winners John Lithgow (The Crown) and Janet McTeer (Tumbleweeds) are officially playing key faculty members of Hogwarts, along with Emmy nominee Paapa Essiedu (Gangs of London) and BIFA nominee Nick Frost (Shaun of the Dead). Lithgow, McTeer, Essiedu, and Frost have been cast as fan-favorite characters Albus Dumbledore, Minerva McGonagall, Severus Snape, and Rubeus Hagrid, respectively. In addition, Luke Thallon (Present Laughter) and Paul Whitehouse (The Fast Show) have been tapped to portray the respective recurring roles of Quirinus Quirrell and Argus Filch, who are also both part of the Hogwarts staff.

The HBO adaptation is written and executive produced by showrunner Francesca Gardiner (Killing Eve, Succession), with Mark Mylod serving as its director. It will be a faithful adaptation of the beloved Harry Potter book series, featuring an exciting and talented cast to lead a new generation of fandom. Executive producers are Mylod, Rowling, Neil Blair, Ruth Kenley-Letts, and long-time Harry Potter franchise producer David Heyman. It is a production by HBO in association with Brontë Film and TV and Warner Bros. Television.

“We are happy to announce the casting of John Lithgow, Janet McTeer, Paapa Essiedu, Nick Frost, Luke Thallon, and Paul Whitehouse to play Dumbledore, McGonagall, Snape, Hagrid, Quirrell and Filch,” Gardiner and Mylod said in a statement. “We’re delighted to have such extraordinary talent onboard, and we can’t wait to see them bring these beloved characters to new life.”
